Advice needed for searches, passage lists and workflow
Hi, I recently returned to Logos desktop, after a long time (years) of only having access to the mobile app, and I would like some advice on a study I'm doing, in terms of the best tools to use and how to use them.
My use case is that I want to look into all the references to the gift of prophecy I can find in the New Testament. In particular, I'm looking for:
1. Anywhere where a person such as Jesus or one of the disciples in the early church operates in the gift of prophecy or related gifts like words of knowledge or wisdom
2. Anywhere the gift of prophecy is referenced or we see teaching or wisdom on it, such as the letters where spiritual gifts are mentioned/listed and places like 1 Cor 14:1 which talks about "eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy"
My plan is to later do a deeper study of specific passages that stand out to me.
I started off with a search for every reference to prophecy in the NT, which gave me somewhere in the region of 700+ results, so I need to break it into manageable chunks to review which ones are actually relevant (perhaps reviewing one gospel or letter at a time, for example).
I tried putting the search results into a passage list, but there doesn't appear to be a way to filter or sort that list.
Would you please let me know if I'm going about things the right way or if there are other tools in logos (or perhaps in the original search) I should be using instead? If you have any tips on overall workflow, as part of that, then so much the better!

1. Anywhere where a person such as Jesus or one of the disciples in the early church operates in the gift of prophecy or related gifts like words of knowledge or wisdom
I looked at Agabus in Acts 21:11 and the right-click menu showed Prophesying and gave a search for culture:Prophesying.
From Mt 7:24 I tried longacreGenre:"Behavioral: Hortatory", which looks promising.
I doubt you will get practical examples for words of knowledge, but you might pick something for wisdom.
There is a label:miracle which you can tailor to people and type of miracle
2. Anywhere the gift of prophecy is referenced or we see teaching or wisdom on it, such as the letters where spiritual gifts are mentioned/listed and places like 1 Cor 14:1 which talks about "eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy"
Try term:(wise OR wisdom) OR knowledge OR prophecy with [match all forms]
I tried putting the search results into a passage list, but there doesn't appear to be a way to filter or sort that list.
Hover over a passage and you will get an option to Delete on the right side.
Click Sort at the top of the List.
You can Insert Heading if you right-click an entry (but not when Compact) and Sort will work within that heading.

Thanks Dave, that's really helpful, particularly some of those search options which I wasn't really aware of before.
I think I need to get more familiar with the search syntax!
Hmm. If there's no way to filter a passage list, only sort and divide it up with headings, it also sounds like I need to filter my search first and then add them to the passage list. Or perhaps I just need to accept what I have and wade through the list I have...
OK, I'm thinking I should try out some of the other search options, like the ones you mentioned, put them into my passage list, and then work my way through it.
I could start with a sort to remove any duplicates, then divide it up using headings, such as take each gospel in turn, individual letters, etc.
I can then review each verse and delete the ones I don't want, to collate my final list.
Does that sound like a good approach?
My next thought is what if I want to take notes on some of the verses from my curated passage list.
Should I copy the relevant verses to a Clippings document and annotate them, or am I better using the Notes tool to collect thoughts together, or is this best done outside of Logos?
Sorry if all this is obvious to you, but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the tools and options Logos has to offer!

Use Search and filter by Passage/Gospel. Then generate and review the Passage List. Your final list could then be a merging of several PL.
You can run another Search over a Passage List to refine it - instead of a Reference Range, scroll down until you see your PL.

You can use a URL link to reference a Passage List from a Note or a Clipping. I would use a Clipping if my aim is to document a topic/theme e.g. miracles. Notes tool is better for documenting a passage.

Thanks again, really helpful stuff!
I had forgotten about merging passage lists, so that could be useful.
And I'll try out the search range in the passage list - that's the bit I couldn't work out the other day.

To study the gift of prophecy in the New Testament using the Logos desktop, here's a suggested workflow:
1. Begin with a broad search for references to prophecy in the New Testament.
2. Refine your search by adding specific terms or using Boolean operators to narrow down the results.
3. Utilize the Passage Guide tool for in-depth study. Enter a specific reference (e.g., 1 Cor 14:1) to access relevant commentaries, cross-references, and other resources.
4. Consider using the Exegetical Guide tool to delve deeper into specific passages.
5. Explore the Topic Guide tool to gather information on the gift of prophecy throughout the New Testament.
6. Create a custom reading plan to review manageable chunks of relevant passages, such as studying one gospel or letter at a time.
7. While creating a passage list is helpful, note that it doesn't offer filtering or sorting options. However, you can export the list to other programs for further organization and analysis.Remember to take advantage of Logos' extensive library, including commentaries, lexicons, and theological resources, to enhance your study.
