The Ancient Literature Guide helps a user relate a Bible passage to passages in the deuterocanonical and pseudepigrapha literature, but that doesn't help when you want to know the common knowledge (context) of Biblical characters. For this we have two rather limited resources.
Ginzberg, Louis, Henrietta Szold, and Paul Radin. Legends of the Jews. 2nd ed. Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society, 2003 provides a topical index and an index of sources:
The other index is by Charles: Charles, R. H. Index to the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913.
These resources are essential for Biblical context; it is worth becoming familiar with them.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
