...my system fired up all of its 13 fans to max for the first time. Kinda surprised me--never heard it get so hot and bothered before, and my Kraken read-out said the cpu was rocking over 80 degrees...first time I've seen that happen. I was puzzled and worried about what the cause might be, then I remembered I had just started Logos and it was indexing. I checked the icon in the system tray and it was just finishing up (99%). The temp immediately started to drop...back now to a typical 40ish. I guess my new 5950x was cramming that index through the pipe in a hurry. Wonder if that will be typical now?

That is why i spend the extra money a year ago to get an overclocked gaming laptop, so I didn't have to worry about upgrading for while.

I experienced the same thing on my Intel Mac when it indexed; somewhere around 99% it would throttle up big time.

Yours is slightly newer to market (2021 vs 2020), but you can't compare a laptop processor to a desktop processor with much higher thermal characteristics (45+W vs 105W) - albeit that 13 fans would imply it doesn't have liquid cooling which yours might have!

How much RAM in total? How many logical processors used (you can use the Indexer log to see how many threads are created). More importantly, was the indexing time slow or fast?

Actually, I have an NZXT Kraken Z73 AIO, which is what gives me a real-time readout of cpu and gpu temps. The 13 fans are just my typical overkill, and they work beautifully, since it is pretty rare that I see temps above 50s...30s and 40s are usual. Just booted up Logos and it ran another index, so I went into another room and once again at the end of it, the fans kicked in...probably because it shot up to the 80s again. When I made back to my desk, it was already throttling down and was upper 70s.

I recently picked up a month-old Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 gpu for almost $1000 below retail, but it requires four cables to the power supply, and all my extras are in storage currently. I could buy another set of cables for not too much money, but I'm just going to wait a few weeks until I can go get my stuff out of storage in LA. My 2080ti handles everything I'm doing just fine, so no rush.

It was fast, when I say it hit 83% it was a spike not lasting & 16g Ram.

I try not to reboot my system too often, but I still do it periodically, and this volcanic eruption of my cpu keeps happening every time Logos indexes my library. It gets up to 88-89 degrees, which is BAD for my cpu. What gives??? This is a problem. NAY, A BUG.

How many threads does the Indexer allocate (look at LogosIndexer.log) when the CPU overheats? I assume it doesn't do so with a modest load of 2 or 3 books?

Yes. I want to be clear with everyone that AMD views temps up to 90C (5800X/5900X/5950X) and 95C (5600X) as typical and by design for full load conditions. Having a higher maximum temperature supported by the silicon and firmware allows the CPU to pursue higher and longer boost performance before the algorithm pulls back for thermal reasons.

I'm confused as to why you don't want Logos to use your CPU to its full potential; can you clarify?

For me, personally, I don't care about the temperature but my Del gaming laptop, still Win 10 and starting to get a bit old, turns its fan up to leaf-blower mode when indexing gets to 96%. One of the first things I did when I got the laptop was to turn off automatic updates for that reason to prevent making a seen in Sunday School, or class. During the week I don't care but it is noticeable. Now I just have to be disciplined enough to not hit the update button right before church starts.
