Why is 1 Peter volume not in my New American Commentary Series

Hi,

I acquired the entire New American Commentary series with the Scholars Silver package (the main reason I bought at the Silver level), but now I am noticing that the 1 and 2 Peter and Jude Volume is not in my library, even though it is available for purchase.

Can someone tell me why I don't have this particular volume? And how I can get it?

It appears that you should have it. How did you search for it?There may be a metadata problem that caused you to miss it. Did you try by author - Thomas R. Schreiner?

No, I'm sure I don't have it. I did the author search as you suggested, and it didn't show up. I tried in both the Libronix 1 program as well as the Logos 4 Mac Beta that I am using.

I also noted that it doesn't come up in the commentary list when I do a search for 1 Peter in the passage guide, so it is definitely not there.

Is this a very recent purchase? if so, are you certain that the indexing is complete?

And it might be worth doing an "update now" in the command box to see if it is aware that it is missing the resource.

Neither of those seem likely? shoot an email off to Customer Support (or phone depending on where you live etc... )

When did you purchase the silver edition? I believe when the NAC series was first offered the Logos collection didn't have every volume since some were only recently published and hadn't been converted to Logos' format. They were then added to later versions of the base packages. This could be the reason you don't have this particular volume. Check the website do you have an upgrade price for the Silver level. If so, you need to upgrade your base package or purchase the individual license to get this.

Now, if I'm off base by assuming that you purchased Silver a while ago then a call to Customer Service is needed to double-check the licenses on your account.

I do have an email off to customer support, but thought I would try on here as well. I am using Logos 4 beta for Mac and the Libronix for Mac. My purchase was made probably around 6 months or so ago. Do either of you guys know if the 1 Peter volume is a recent edition to the series? If so, that might be why it wasn't included in my purchase.

I'm hesitant to do the "update now" because I leave the internet turned to off due to high internet costs (I live in Asia).

If not, what do you guys recommend as the cheapest way to acquire it? Should I just buy the individual license for the book or do some kind of upgrade of the series? I find the Logos products hard to figure out in terms of what is the cheapest way to get resources.

If you purchased silver six months ago then you have the latest version of the library and by extension the NAC collection. This is sounding more like something Customer Service will have to fix.

Can one of you guys explain to me the "update now" feature of Logos 4? What exactly does it do? And what does "indexing" do? Because I live overseas I got all my resources on DVD when I first bought Logos so that I would not have to be using the internet. I don't understand why the software needs to use the internet AFTER I have all my resources installed? My internet access is very limited and expensive.

http://www.logos.com/products/details/1515 shows that at some stage (as Kevin stated) 1&2 Peter and Jude were not included in the base package.

It may be worth checking whether you have the other omissions mentioned on this page to see whether you got the 31-volume set or the full 37.

As Graham said, this looks like you purchased it from a time when the NAC collection was less-complete. Your cheapest option per book is to upgrade your base package. However, this is only "cheap" if you want enough of the new books stemming from the upgrade. I seem to remember a NAC upgrade to complete the commentary series, but I can't seem to find it on the website right now, this would be your next cheapest option. Finally, the single book purchase tends to be the most expensive way (per book) to get Logos resources. However, if your funds are limited this might be the way to go as the cost will probably be less than the other two options, the downside is you only get one book.

Interestingly, I have 32 volumes. In addition to the original 31, I also have the second volume on the Gospel of John. All the other titles listed on the page you sent are missing.

Now, the question is, what is the cheapest way to fill out this commentary? Should I buy individual licenses for each book? Or is there some way to upgrade the entire series?

Update now checks Logos' servers for new versions of the software and book files. It sounds like you should avoid this because there is likely Gigabytes of information that Logos would want to download if you were to use this command. Since Logos 4 is a relatively new product it is changing rapidly. As features are added it is common to need to adjust the format of the resources so that new features can work. This is why book files are updated.

Indexing allows you to search your books. When you perform a search the engine looks at the index rather than through the book files. Indexes allow for faster searching than without.

Logos has a sync feature with backs up user files on servers. This allows to instances of Logos 4 to have the exact same notes, highlights and other things like it. The homepage also pulls information from several Logos RSS feeds. Logos doesn't need to do these things but that's what it uses internet for outside of updates.

I checked out the personalized upgrade options that Logos was offering me on my user account. For around 350 bucks, I could get all 6 volumes of the NAC series, plus there were some other resources that I might possibly use, but I think the wisest course for me at this point is to just bite the bullet and pay the $26 for the one book I want (even though I can get it for the Kindle for only $10.)

Interestingly, the personalized upgrade presentation didn't highlight the additional 6 volumes of the NAC series as new books that I would be getting. Which means that users might want to be aware that if they upgrade, they may be getting more books than what are being displayed in the presentation.

OK, I went ahead and bought the one volume that I need and now I have problems.

I am using the Logos 4 Mac Beta 7 and when I tried to download the new purchase, it wanted to download over 6GB of updates (I pay US$75/month for 4GB of bandwidth.)

So, I thought no problem, I'll follow the instructions to download for older versions and then download it for Libronix. But when I tried to do that, it told me to download the file from the product info page. There is a link there to the downloadable (it is called NAC37.lbxlls (3.23Mb))

So I clicked on this link and when it dowloaded to my macbook, it was just called "downloaded file" I tried to download it twice and neither time did it work correctly. I tried renaming it to the file name above and then put this in the appropriate folder.

The result is that, even though the file type doesn't say "Unix executable file" (like all the other lbxlls files in there), it still works when I open Libronix and I can now read the commentary in Libronix.

My question now is... how can I get my new book into Logos 4 Mac, Beta 7? I can't do the update function because it will want me to update everything. All I need is the 3mb file for my book.

Any help you guys can give me?

Any missing resources for which you have a license should be downloaded.

For example, if a new volume is added to a series, it isn't going to be added to my collection through the update feature. Correct?

Only if Logos includes the new volumes as part of your original license.

Unfortunately, L4 (Win or Mac) does not allow selective downloading, although it has been frequently requested. It is still an all or nothing proposition.

I have heard of the Scan command, but when I attempted to use it in L4 Mac, all I got was "Scan Optical Media". From the Wiki:

[quote]Scan {Resource Path} finds unlocked books in a folder or on a disk. You must close Logos and reopen it before this command executes.

This is for Windows, but the same should apply to the Mac version. I have never used the command, so someone else will have to assist if this does not work for you.

I'm late coming to this thread but I'm concerned you have just purchased resources you were entitled to receive with the Silver LE upgrade; because I got the NAC with 37 volumes when I upgraded to Silver LE on 25 Nov 2009! Those 37 volumes were on the Silver DVD I also purchased so you should have the 1 & 2 Peter + Jude volume and the only way you will get a controlled update is to purchase the DVD. But have a chat/email with Sales & see how they can help you resolve the situation.

Be aware there are a further 2 volumes you can purchase - NAC Zechariah and Is 40-66

This is a guess on how to do this:

Start Logos, Turn Use Internet to On (leave automatically download updates to off)
Issue the Command "Sync Now" (hopefully this will update the license files to include your new purchase)
After it syncs Restart Logos and turn Internet back OFF
Put your media DVD in the drive and use the scan optical drive (it should be on your media-only disc)
