What do you think about Thomas Nelson's new Essential Bible Study Library (CD-ROM)?

Although I am in the UK I have just received an email from Amazon.com (rather than Amazon.uk) inviting me to place a pre-order for this new Essential Bible Study Library CD from Thomas Nelson. As it contains the Libronix engine and some resources, it may be an excellent starter to pack to buy and give away to a few friends to encourage them in their studies, at a price which makes giving it away affordable. I don't know precisely what's included as I haven't come across any contents lists. Does anyone know & what do you think?

For under $20 there probably isn't much in there - but it should be a great gift pack to get people started on Logos.

Apparently Thomas Nelson doesn't even want you to know what's in there, the item page does not list any details. So I sent an email off to their customer support. Hopefully they'll respond.

It does come with Libronix 3, but most of the addins that are available for purchase separately are not included.

Hi Paul, Yes, naturally Amazon.co.uk would - but initially it was the .com site (which I believe to be American) that informed me of this product, whereas the UK site simply said it was unavailable and pointed me to the American site anyway - but thanks!

I would imagine that it is just incorrect information on the UK site. It probably should be in "This title has not yet been released." status. Time will tell.

You could always contact Thomas Nelson, and ask who their UK distributor is. They would probably have better information.

£15 does make it a little bit expensive for a "give away" for friends. Double the US discount price. I wonder if you could get shipping from over here for less than £7.50...

I don't want to give the impression that I'm a bit of a 'pennypincher' - naturally I'll pay whatever's right, it's just that if you're not careful the advantage gained by the offer price which makes it ideal to give away, is lost by the shipping costs, but at least it now looks possible to purchase it over here which might be cheaper..

I think that Logos is so good that I would like to recommend it to all my friends (and not just pastors) but at £95 even the Christian Home edition is a fairly costly introduction for some. Which is why I thought that this particular edition might be a useful starter giving my friends the choice to expand later should they wish to .Sorry I think this all sounds a bit garbled - hope you understand!

I think it is a nice introductory gift. Not a great loss if they don't use it but potentially a great boon when they too discover Logos software.

This collection has just one title I don't already have - "From This Verse." If I just had to have it, it costs $15 to download from Logos.com. So if there were 4 or 5 new titles it would be a worthwhile purchase.[Y]

A lot of the good things we get come from the British, including the phrase "pennypincher" (we Americans normally hyphenate it, though). Seems you have opened up a topic of interest, and we hope you find feasible shipping prices. It has been my understanding that Nelson was heading to a different software distribution platform, like maybe Quickverse, but I'm glad to see they are still moving with some Libronix/LOGOS. I recently purchased a very similar ebible Deluxe from 2006, on sale at a bookstore for like $29, it was originally priced $80, and I had previously researched it as a good entry for myself into LOGOS. This package includes all the same goodies that I have on my shelf and wanted in an electronic format; Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Nelson's Book of Maps and Charts, Nelson's 3-D Maps, plus this one has Nelson's Illustrated Bible Commentary, and costs half the price! A person can buy this package, and not have to worry that they will lose their investment when purchasing a LOGOS package, for none of the LOGOS packages carry these titles. Also, LOGOS seems to give good deals to those already building a library, that they won't have to pay twice for the same books. I don't know if they offer discounts to everyone wanting a LOGOS package, but after purchasing my ebible, they seem to be offering me 25-30% discounts on their packages, should I expand my library now.

I think you have made a very good point, in fact my own entry into LOGOS was through a UK version of Nelson's Ultimate Bible Reference CD-ROM which included 115 resources and 8 Bibles all unlocked and ready to use for under £30.00 (unfortunately, we have to buy the NIV separately for another £20.00), but it was because I got a taste for how good the libronix system was that I eventually stepped up to the Leader's edition from Logos and have been flying ever since. I think Logos could do pretty well if they provided a more realistic starter/'taste and see pack which might encourage more people to give it a go. Or is this niche in the market left to Thomas Nelson?

I must add a word of warning: If you build your library in bits and pieces by purchasing many different Nelson packages you will effectively reduce the grand super savings you realize when purchasing the Nelson 503 Book Unlock (503 Vols.) [DVD-ROM] http://www.logos.com/products/details/5248
So you can ignore what I previously said and start saving up for the DVD and get everything at once. Sadly, I have accumulated too many using the "pillage" scheme. (I haven't heard of an upgrade price to the DVD that makes it desirable once you have most of it.)

It would be great if they could, but I'm sure they will think it too hard to operate as it's the bundling of books which surely gives rise to the discount they can offer. Once you start taking books out of the bundle the discounting will be thrown into disarray. But I guess it doesn't hurt to ask!!!!

I need to first get all the different collections installed and synchronized with the Logos server before I approach customer service with that question. I don't even know what I have in some of the collections. Nelson has published many fine books over the last 30 years and a lot of it has found it's way into Libronix.

Same goes for any Zondervan cross-grade from Pradis to Logos.. I have some Pradis titles not yet registered with Zondervan. Every time I try to get all of it organized and installed I get sidetracked reading some of the content for hours....and hours.. .[8-|] "Help me, Spock!", "Help me, Kirk!"
