I am wonering what is the difference in "reference" "text range", and my total notes? I believe they are all in the same translation (ESV)

    difference in "reference" "text range",

Reference means that the note is attached to a reference e.g. Mark 1:4 and will appear in any book that has Bible milestones (basically Bibles and commentaries).

Text means that the note is attached to a selection of words within the text e.g. "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins" and will appear only in the ESV on those words at this location.

The selection/reference option in the upper left of the context menu controls which type of note you create.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

There is an overlap between Text Range and Reference under Anchor as many notes in a bible (say) are done by selection/range of text in a passage. So the number for Reference (962) + Unanchored (20) gets you close to the total notes (987)  - the numbers in the screenshot are not clear.
