How do I search my library to discover the single volume commentaries? I find them useful when I am quickly getting the context of a pericope.
Thanks.
You can put this rule into the library search bar or you can use this rule to create a collection:
type:bible-commentary ANDNOT series:* AND (((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible. O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible. .N.T.--Commentaries”) OR subject:"bible handbooks" OR subject:"bible introductions") OR tag:commentary-one-volume) ANDNOT title:volumes
Just copy/paste that string into your library or into a collection.
ANDNOT title:volumes will omit "Matthew Poole’s Commentary on the Holy Bible, Volumes 1–3"
ANDNOT series:* will exclude The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible
i.e.
type:bible-commentary AND (((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible. O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible. .N.T.--Commentaries”) OR subject:"bible handbooks" OR subject:"bible introductions") OR tag:commentary-one-volume)
and I would omit subject:"bible handbooks" OR subject:"bible introductions" as they should be caught by tag:commentary-one-volume if there is incorrect metadata (that needs to be a mytag as tag will come from other users) i.e.
type:bible-commentary AND ((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible. O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible. .N.T.--Commentaries”) OR mytag:commentary-one-volume)
I personally would want to include tags from other users since I haven't done that much extensive tagging myself, but many other users have. I rely heavily on community tagging.
I didn't create the collection rule above, I think I either got it from Morris Proctor or someone shared it in Docs and I downloaded it without much scrutiny, so your feedback is welcome.
Excluding this causes it to include commentaries that don't cover the whole bible, so I'm seeing results for commentaries that only cover the OT or NT, or that only cover a certain range of books.
Here's my updated rule:
type:bible-commentary ANDNOT series:* AND ((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible. O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible. .N.T.--Commentaries”) OR tag:commentaryonevolume)
I changed the final tag since that one actually exists in the community and that's how I would style it if I added my own.
ANDNOT series:* will exclude The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible Excluding this causes it to include commentaries that don't cover the whole bible, so I'm seeing results for commentaries that only cover the OT or NT, or that only cover a certain range of books.
The Thompson bible commentary does cover the entire bible as per its TOC! Its coverage of each book is a matter of opinion, and the same will apply to other commentaries that are "one volume" without series metadata!
I would like to see the Subjects (in a Library screenshot) of books included by type:bible-commentary AND series:*
Here are the books that go with all those subjects:
As you can see, these are not one-volume commentaries on the whole bible so I wouldn't want to include these in that collection. Since I don't have the Thompson Chain Bible I didn't notice that it was excluded.
Thanks for interpreting my request correctly!
It appears that 6 of the 8 have Bible—Commentaries + select books of the bible
And one (1) has Bible.O.T.--Commentaries AND Bible.N.T.--Commentaries also with select books of the bible
I would ask for the metadata to be corrected. Create a thread with title "Resource Metadata Error: 7 Commentaries" for the last 7 titles.
But what are the subjects for "The New Testament"?
.
Not sure about the first book "The Old Testament and Apocrypha", as it has:

Note: series:"Bible History Commentary" is two volumes.
Library filter subj:bible-commentaries AND series:* found four with Bible index to include in filter for single volume commentaries:

We need simple rather than complex. The main criteria is type:bible-commentary AND ((subject:"Bible—Commentaries" ANDNOT subject:"Bible—Commentaries—Collected works") OR (subject:”Bible.O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible.N.T.--Commentaries”))
Anything else is bad metadata and can be Tagged for inclusion.
Your 14 volume "The Complete Biblical Library" should be alerted via a "Resource Metadata Error" thread. The "New Testament Page by Page" is also bad.The others look OK unless you know otherwise from their TOC.
You might want to add Study Bibles to your collection. They are in a sense “One volume commentaries.”
DAL
Subj:Bible-Notes OR Type:"Study Bible"
The "New Testament Page by Page" is also bad.
For pericope overview, The Open Your Bible Commentary: The New Testament Page by Page looks useful:
You might want to add Study Bibles to your collection.
I do include a few exceptional ones via user tagging as their Subject metadata is hopeless.
The "New Testament Page by Page" is also bad. For pericope overview, The Open Your Bible Commentary: The New Testament Page by Page looks useful:
I only said it had bad metadata. It should be Bible.N.T.--Commentaries
But what are the subjects for "The New Testament"? . Not sure about the first book "The Old Testament and Apocrypha", as it has: Bible.O.T.--Commentaries with Bible.O.T.--Apocrypha--Commentaries so it should not have been listed the series name, Fortress Commentary on the Bible is incidental but check if it is the same as yours, being LLS:FRTRSSCMMPCRYPH version 2015-04-30T00:41:07Z.
Both of these make up the Fortress Commentary on the Bible, with one volume for the OT and Apocrypha and one volume for the NT. Here are the subjects for those:

Found a couple single volume anomalies: (single volume lacking both Old & New Testaments)
The Jewish Study Bible is a single volume Study Bible about the Old Testament with Subject:"Bible. O.T.--Commentaries"
Studies in the New Testament is a single volume about the New Testament with Subject:"Bible--Commentaries."

"single volume" is understood as a volume that covers both OT and NT books (OT Apocrypha may be a requirement for some) because they are often needed as a link to move between commentary Collections on single or multiple books. There is nothing wrong with JSB, but it is not a single volume! Studies in the NT is also not a single volume commentary, but its metadata should be "Bible. N.T.--Commentaries".
Thanks for the help, for my purposes, I would include single OT and NT monographs.
Thanks, Carl. You helped me focus attention on tagging those types of books for studying Revelation i.e. type:mono subj:N.T.Revelation
