Help with the search syntax (NOT operator)

Hello everybody,

I have a passage list called "Senses | jealous › Senses" which has all the verses with the word's sense: jealousy, jealousy (righteous), to be jealous, to make jealous, jealousy (vigilance), jealous

When I do a search "speaker:God" on this passage list, I get 60 results in 22 verses. How do I invert this search so I can see all the verses where God is NOT the speaker?

I looked at the wiki pages and wasn't able to come up with a solution. (And manually comparing two lists is not a solution;)

Thanks in advance for any help and tips!

The challenge - as you have probably found out - is that the NOT operator needs something either side of it so there needs to be something indicating speech before excluding God as the speaker.

If you have the Hebrew and Greek discource datasets you can use LDHB:"Reported Speech" (for Hebrews) and LDGNT:"Reported Speech" (for Greek).

Combining these gives (LDHB:"Reported Speech" NOT speaker:God) OR (LDGNT:"Reported Speech" NOT speaker:God)

I hope there is a simpler way but I can't think of it at the moment!

Yes, that was exactly what I've encountered about the NOT operator. Your solution gets the job done, thank you! (I thought of searching for something so general it would be in every verse, but haven't thought of this. Thanks!)

Huh, running that search query, I get 11 results in 5 verses. But the passage list has 59 verses.

So that still leaves about 32 verses that are unaccounted for... Any idea?

It sounds like in the other 32 verses there is no recorded speech at all.

Would that explain it?

There are only 18 verses with reported speech that relate to jealousy in the Bible. Perhaps this will make it clearer:-

sense:(jealous OR jealousy OR "jealousy (righteous)" OR "jealousy (vigilance)" OR "to be jealous" OR "to make jealous") INTERSECTS (LDGNT:"Reported Speech" OR LDHB:"Reported Speech")

Excluding Speaker God gives 5 verses:

sense:(jealous OR jealousy OR "jealousy (righteous)" OR "jealousy (vigilance)" OR "to be jealous" OR "to make jealous") INTERSECTS (LDGNT:"Reported Speech" OR LDHB:"Reported Speech") NOT INTERSECTS speaker:God

In general NOT is inefficient by itself e.g. try Jesus NOT "Jesus Christ" vs Jesus NOT INTERSECTS "Jesus Christ" in 1 Cor.

Verses with No Reported Speech

Find verses with Reported Speech --> (LDGNT:"Reported Speech" OR LDHB:"Reported Speech")
Create a Passage List #1
Find verses with no (or some) Reported Speech --> * NOT INTERSECTS (LDGNT:"Reported Speech" OR LDHB:"Reported Speech")

Allow at least 10 minutes for this

Create a Passage List #2
Merge with #1 by Difference (remove common passages)

As you can see, you have to remove verses that have some reported speech in them.

This would be easier if you separated NT from OT results then combined them

It will eliminate verses (or chapters) where God is a speaker, but it will also eliminate other speakers in the verse/chapter!

It will eliminate 1 Cor 1:2
