notes/clippings/passage list

I have two questions about notes and clippings and passage lists

#1 Is anyone using these on a regular basis? If so, how?

Without being able to copy them to another application...I can't even see how to print them...I don't get how they are more than a casual tool for recording personal reflections...not something that can be taught from....

(a few months ago I switched to the Mac version, so perhaps export/copy/print is available in the Win version)

#2 Why are these three things different? each has slightly different functionality and it feels like I'd want to be able to do all three things in the same place... anyone else feel like this? perhaps when i learn how others are using them, I won't want to have clippings to be different than notes.

You're right, these are designed as personal/individual study tools, not teaching tools. That said, some have used them as teaching tools, though I'm not one of them. I prefer to use my word processor to put materials in the hands of my Bible study group.

Printing as well as copy/paste is available now, but it's possible that this is only for the Beta version (I don't remember and I'm using the beta right now). I have no idea how long it will take the Mac dev team to release printing capabilities.

They are different, and function differently, so they have different uses.

Clippings work great for collecting quotes from numerous resources. I've found them helpful for this particularly with topical studies (e.g., when I was doing a study on the Armor of God I had clipping files for each piece). Now that we are able to sort them, they'll function much like a research note cards.

Notes are good for making small annotations in the text. Some use them for more complex uses, but I find I'm better off using an external program (WordPerfect) for that. I think of the notes function as something like my personal study Bible integrated into the program, or like making notes in the margins. For extended word studies, topical studies, or anything in depth, I'll use WordPerfect and store my work in a folder called "Study" I may make a note in a text pointing to that study to remind me that I have it and where I put it.

Verse lists are helpful for collecting word-study information, topical, or whatever else you want. I don't use these very much, since we now have the Bible Word Study module, and because it's so easy to right-click and search for verses containing words of phrases I'm looking into. But others find them indispensable. I used them more in L3, and can't remember even using the feature in L4 (preferring the BWS module and enjoying the ease of searching a resource for all occurrences of a word). Maybe someone who uses these more will chime in. Once again, if I were to want to hand anything out, I'd copy/paste into WordPerfect and create an output that I had more print control over.

I cannot add anything to what Richard has already said about the printing / export functions other than to say when it does come out of Beta there will be a lot of happy folks. It's a great feature.

As for the use of notes, clippings and passage lists I would suggest visiting the video tutorial page on the Wiki. http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4_Video_Tutorials

I especially recommend watching the 4-part series by Mark Barnes on sermon prep as he makes great use of notes and clippings (as well as some other tools and features) in these videos to both instruct and spark your imagination regarding how they can be applied in you study.

I also recommend two videos by Kevin Becker on passage lists. He did a great job illustrating some valuable applications for this feature.

I'll describe how I use these as I'm studying a passage/book of the Bible (which I outline for preaching/teaching)

Notes - I use this primarily to jot down my observations & questions, so that I can make sure that I answer them as I'm studying. I also use it to jot down thoughts that come to mind that I want to remember or stuff I want to explore more later on. All of my primary outlining & note taking is down in Microsoft applications (Word & OneNote)

Clippings - As I'm studying a passage, I use this to grab quotes that stand out to me as I'm reading through the commentaries. I'll typically highlight it in the text, but to save from reading through a whole article again, I use this to grab the key points that I want to remember & make note of in my teaching.

Passage Lists - I use these to make my own set of cross references for each verse that I'm studying. I'll make a passage list file for an entire chapter, and then use headings to mark verses or groups of verses. This allows me to have my own "Treasury of Scripture Knowledge" of sorts that incorporates all xrefs that I find on my own, from commentaries, & the TSK.

Also, just to note... I use clippings & note files for smaller portions of scripture (just a handful of verses), while passage lists are for an entire chapter

also, just to add to how i use clippings... i make sure i put comments on each clipping so that I can easily remember why i originally clipped it (as it may be days before i can get back to my study sometimes)

Passage lists have the ability to be filters which makes them functionally quite different than either notes or clippings. Their expansions and sorts are also specific to their function. Please don't mix them in with notes and clippings.
