A lowered price for Barth's Church Dogmatics?

I received an email today from CBD in which they are offering a new pre-pub price on Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics (the new hardcover set from Hendrickson) for only $99.

I've always wanted my own copy of these books, but the price for either the print edition or the electronic edition has been prohibitive.

While I would prefer an electronic copy, paying only $99 for the entire set at CBD is a hard deal to pass up. Therefore, I wonder if Logos would consider offering their copy of Barth's Church Dogmatics for the same price while CBD's prepub price is being offered?

While I would love a lowered price, the Hendrickson edition that CBD is selling is a reprint of the original edition and is not the current revised edition that Logos is selling. I imagine that the price of the Logos edition is set by the copyright owner, T&T Clark, and that the price of the Hendrickson edition has little bearing on the price of Logos edition.

But it can't hurt to ask.

Yes, now upon taking a closer look, there is mixed information on the Logos page. While there is an update notice near the top about the new edition, the title stills says 14 volumes as opposed to the new edition that is in 31 volumes. Also, the picture on Logos' page is of the old set.

That's because the set was announced before Logos knew they would have access to the update: http://blog.logos.com/archives/2008/03/barths_church_dogmatics_coming_soon.html

The reason for 31 vols in the new edition is because T&T Clark broke up the old volumes into sub volumes to make the books more manageable in size (especially since they added English translation of non-English passages, making the books longer): http://www.continuumbooks.com/books/detail.aspx?BookId=132453&SearchType=Basic. Notice that the titles are still the same, but with I, II, III after them now.

Yes, I understood all that after I looked more closely. Still, it might be worth Logos' time to update the title at the top of the page as well as the picture. Couldn't be that hard to do.

The electronic format makes the Logos product much more desirable. Books in electronic form can be tagged, searched, updated and highlighted or enhanced with personal notes. You can carry your whole Logos library in your pocket.

Book sellers are dumping traditional hardback books at fire sale prices.You can buy the Zondervan Pictorial Bible Encyclopedia for $39.99 (Retail was $160?) It sounds like a death nell for the traditional publishing industry. Does anybody still use a typewriter? Hunter S Thompson was the last person I know of who did..........

Matthew, if you knew me at all, you'd know you that you don't have to sell me on the advantages of electronic books. My latest repeatable mantra has been "I don't care if I never buy another physical book."

However, when originally seeing the Logos set and CBD set as equal content (it's now been made clear this is not the case), weighing $700 (which I don't have) for the electronic copy vs. $100 for the physical set (which I can probably scrounge together) becomes a serious consideration. I'd be willing to do the latter. Right now, I'm not able to do the former, even if it affords the ability to carry all the volumes in my pocket :-)

Good point. Sometimes I still buy a magnetic tape format (VHS, Cassette, or floppy disk) if the price is cheap enough.

Probably true to some degree in this case, but not always. The hardback versions of Robert Webber's The Complete Library of Christian Worship (8 Vols.)http://www.logos.com/products/details/2228 were dumped at $5 each. They have not been superceded by anything comparable. But if we can somehow convince Logos to drop the prices on Barth & Webber because they are cheaper in print form, LET'S DO IT!!

The Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible is the revised version of the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible, I believe.
