Electronic Study Bible Question

Wondering if anyone can help,

I am about to take a course on advanced Hebrew Exegesis, and currently have Logos Platinum. I would love to have the critical apparatuses, which appear to only be available in the SESB collection http://www.logos.com/products/details/6485.

First, those of you who have this resource, how have you found it? Are the apparatuses really usable, in that you can hover your mouse over the abbreviations, and the definitions appear?

Second, I hear that there is a new release coming in 2011, and I am wondering if the current one works well in L4, or if I should wait for the upcoming release? What would the transition look like/cost?

Finally, is it REALLY worth all that money?

Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance!!!

Below is a screen shot of BHS. You can access the apparatus in two ways:

1) Hover of marker in BHS text:

2. Click on the marker and have the apparatus open up in a separate window.

3. With the apparatus open in a separate window you can hover over the components to get an explanation

I have also heard a new version is coming up next year but have not heard much more than that, and certainly not the cost. When SESB 3.0 came out there was an upgrade prcing avaialbe for SESB 1.0 or 2.0 owners. Upgrade pricing has in the past included access to additional resources. You can see what the current upgrade price is here, http://www.logos.com/products/details/5257 but since we don't know at this stage what additional resources are to be included then its very difficult to know for sure if it will be a similar sort of upgrade price this time around.

I'll leave specific advice to those who are much more adept at working with Hebrew than I currently am to give you specific advice on how it benefits their study but suggest you take a look at the SESB website where you can see further information about the current product. There is a powerpoint file you can download to see a demonstration of the product and some tutorial videos as well as other useful information that might assist you in your purchase.

The other thing you need to consider is timing. I don't have a date on when the actual release will be in 2011. You seem to sugest you will be starting your course soon, but don't indicate exactly when. It might be the release date is in second half of 2011 and you may be well into your course. Just a thought.

If I was in your position I would ask my Hebrew prof how much textual criticism the class would entail. I suspect that the apparatus in a print BHS would probably be good enough unless you are doing intense work (i.e. searches would be helpful) with the apparatus.

I'm waiting until the next SESB release to see what it entails. I'm hoping it will include the upcoming NA28 (I'm assuming the apparatus will be updated for it.) Until then my print versions will suffice.

This one is for those who have previously bough SESB 1.0 or 2.0 and want to upgrade it to the full 3.0 version

This one is a cut down of the full version 3.0. You don't need to have owned SESB 1.0 or 2.0. It basically contains only the orginal language resources. Where as the full version of 3.0 contains additional forgeign language resources, particularly german resources. So rather than compaing this with the package (which has 18 volumes) with the US159 package, you neeed to compare it with the US325 package http://www.logos.com/products/details/5181 (which has 52 volumes). The big limitation here though is Logos is only license to sell this package to North American customers. If in doubt best to contact customer service as to whether you can purchase it from them or not.

No, as Andrew pointed out, the upgrade price is offered for people who currently own version 2 or 3 who want the to go to the full version 3 - the original language texts, the dictionaries, the additional resources, and a stack of modern bible translations in a range of modern European languages.

The other price is for a cut down version of the complete product offered to new users and only for Logos' US (and North American?) customers, which cuts out all the added modern European language translations. You'd need to compare what's in the full v.3 to see what you actually forgo in opting for this cut down version. You certainly still get the Greek and Hebrew bibles complete with the apparatuses, which is the really desirable "guts" of the package, less all the frills.

We Australians don't have this option. We have to go all the way to the Bible Society of Germany to get an our update or buy the complete product outright. If like me you have only the version 2 package, the German Bible society is saying we have to upgrade to v.3 pronto or we miss out on the opportunity to get upgrade pricing on future updates. For my part, I would really like to know what's coming up around the corner to see if that would be worthwhile.
