BADG and BDAG

Hey there,

Today, I joined one of Logos' webinars, and the presenter showcased all their examples using the BDAG 3rd edition. I have the BADG 2nd edition, which I'm not quite sure when I got – whether it was back when I first got Libronix or after upgrading to Logos 4. Anyway, it's not the first time I've heard about the BDAG 3rd edition and its significance. So, I looked up the price to potentially buy it. However, considering my current basic and casual level of study, do you think it's really necessary?

Curiously, I was exploring the forums and stumbled upon people asking to obtain the BADG even though they already have the BDAG. This got me thinking: shouldn't the BDAG be an improved version of the BADG, with better content, updated information, and more nuanced definitions? I already have the HALOT in my library but if I opt for the BDAG/HALOT bundle, I can get a better price for the BDAG than purchasing it separately.

So, what's your take on this?

I recently added the BDAG to my library. Given that it is expensive and as far as I know not often (or at all) discounted, I decided to upgrade to the Academic Pro package, which included BDAG and many other resources.

Like yourself, I also have the older BADG from back in the Libronix days. Many would like to purchase the older one because other resources link to it, but it can no longer be purchased.

One of you can confirm that owning BAGD does no good as Logos hasn't updated its links for many years. As there is some question about the rights the Second ed. is something of a useless novelty at this time just slightly better than owning a paper copy.

Can someone please explain to me this "resources link to it" thing? All I know is that if I put a bible in one side and the BADG at the other and then I sync both, I don't know, let say under letter A, for example, when I click on a word on the bible I automatically get the correspondent reference in the BADG.

I'll try. E.g. Take for instance An Exegetical Summary of Matthew 1-16. View the first link to 1:1 red arrow. When you navigate to this citation and click it links to BAGD which I do not have a license to view.

My question to you is does this link open to the corresponding cite in BAGD for you having the required resource?

An example should bring clarity. When Exegetical Summaries volumes (and many other older commentaries) were being written, BADG was the most current version of the Lexicon and links were coded from ES to BADG. Then BDAG (3rd) was released and BADG (2nd) was removed from the offerings. Newer Commentaries hyperlink to BDAG but not BADG. Older resources link to BADG, but not BDAG. Having both is ideal, but the older version is not available (similar to NIV84 that was removed by the publisher). Edil, you are in the enviable position of having the 2nd and can purchase the 3rd. Those who have the 3rd cannot (at this point) go back and get the 2nd and older commentaries do NOT link to the 3rd.

I tried to replicate what you did. I don't know if this is what you are referring to but here is the result:

So followed your example, did a search in books for the term BADG, choose one of the results randomly (in this case the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary), click on it and the AYBD opened in another panel with the reference. Then if I hover the mouse over the reference I get this:

If I click on the reference and then hover the mouse over the link I get this:

If I click on the link the BADG opens in another panel. Now, if I hover the mouse over the page number of the reference I get this:

So, like, if I click on it, the program just whisks me away to that specific page in the BADG. Is that what you're talking about? If it is, thanks! I'm totally learning something new here. But, back to my original question – Given my level of original languages study, that is normal and casual and which I only do while reading the bible, do I really need to get the BDAG? I mean, are the differences between the BADG and BDAG so substantial that they could make someone switch from being a supralapsarian dispensationalist to an infralapsarian postmillennial? [:D] No, seriously give me some help here, I need to convince my wife that I really need to spend $117.00 on a new book.

If you're not bothered by the fact that BAGD is no longer serviced with updates by Logos. And reported to have numerous "dead links" for this reason, I say no continue to be happy with the coverage you have.

I need to convince my wife that I really need to spend $117.00 on a new book.

This is even a greater stretch. I doubt you'll be able to justify to your wife the necessity of this scholars tool over practical every day needs. Good luck!

I use the BDAG as my primary for regular Greek word studies when searching broader semantic domains it is Louw & Nida. If you are not in seminary, teaching, or preaching, you will be fine with a few basic Lexicons. I am not the right person to talk to about spending money on resources because I have all the expensive ones in Logos & Accordance[:O]

If you are not learning Greek, you do not need it. In fact, you might not really need it if you are learning Greek. But it is what is recommended by the majority of people and institutions who teach Greek.
