Maybe It's Time for Ceslas Spicq's Hebrews in French

Yes, those were heady days in Logosia. Logos (pre-Faithlife, or was that post-Faithlife), had proposed to translate the often cited Spicq on Hebrews. We already had his lexicon, which is a classic.

But winter days came, and an english Spicq was buried in the Logosian snow. It HAD achieved 'Almost There', before burial. Almost.

However ...

I was looking at a big commentary set, and it's heavily discounted in the French packages. Wow. But I don't read french, but no problem (my desired set's in english).

But if so many french resources (there's a bunch!!) ... why not Spicq. And let Logos do the driving ... err .... translating?

I can't believe that was over 11 years ago. I remember reading that and getting excited about it. Which is amazing since I can't remember where I put my keys yesterday. It seems there are so many of those Logos things I've been waiting for that I forgot I was waiting for. If others are in that same boat, that might be why planned projects haven't moved beyond being planned.

Probably not your cup of tea. It's a strange set ... hard to search for the volumes, without the set page ... titles bounced around.

I'm reading the Jeremiah volume, and I love this quote (fasten your seat belt):

"What do we know about the origins of the books of the Hebrew Bible? Nothing! How did they come to be written down in the first place? We do not know! When, why, where and by whom were they written? No reliable information exists to answer such basic questions. To every question of this kind the honest answer is inevitably ‘we do not know!’ We really do know nothing about the origins and formation of the books in the Hebrew Bible. This nescience holds good for the book of Jeremiah also. Now scholars are never satisfied with confessions of ignorance and, in the absence of firm information, seek to construct theories or develop analogies from known sources which will illuminate or explain the data under scrutiny."

To tell the story correctly, and in line with your flow, one must explain that a French villain with the words "publisher" printed in black on his black hat appeared right behind our hero and shot him the back. Nothing more to do, dead before the body reached the floor.

For those who were not part of those days: The work was believed to be orphaned, but Cliff Kvidahl found the obscure publisher who owned the rights - and this publisher refused to allow a translation, which ended the story. Some years later now we may own French works and have them translated on the fly in Logos (great feature!) - or the publisher may reconsider. I think I've read someplace on the forums that the original publisher had to sell out to another company.
