Personal Book Syntax: self populating Text?

Hello all,

I vaguely remember some kind of tag or milestone reference system that would allow the creator of a Personal Book to enter an owned resource’s milestone (with page number or verse references) and the text from that resource would self populate within the personal book once the document was compiled (all simply by milestone reference - no copying and pasting text). (I believe I remember several Bible reading plan personal book docs in the forums that utilized this method.)

Is this still possible? Does anyone remember?

My goal is to create a super commentary of sorts - adding the references of my favorite commentaries and having them all self populate one after another in just one personal book resource.

Anyone know how to do this?..

I think you are talking about dynamic text, included into a PB with dtext

NB yes! This is it!

Now.. do you know if it works with commentaries? It says anything with a Bible milestone will work, but the wiki seems to only include bibles and lectionaries.

It appears that the ‘ref’ syntax will allow any resource with Bible Milestones. Hoping this is the case. I’ll have to try it out.

If you used the res= syntax for a commentary then you know its limitations!

I tried myself - if built as type:lectionary, the dtext worked for study bible notes and commentaries

As an aside, does anyone know if there is a proper bible milestone for bible book introductions? For example, if I wanted only the book introduction for say, Romans to show up? Or is this not something I would be able to do?

I experimented with Mick's file also (thanks!). FYI. I found the potential for uneven results among various commentaries. For example, I tried John 2:23-3:16. It worked fine with D.A. Carson's John commentary. But when I tried it with Calvin's John commentary, it only returned comments for John 2:23-25. The odd result could be due to Calvin's bible text beginning each of his pericopes, which interrupts the flow of the dtext. Maybe Dave was talking about something like this.

The results depend very much on the organisation of the Commentary. You would get an idea from a Milestone search as it highlights the relevant text e.g. milestone:bible:"John 2:23–3:16". The NIVAC-John volume (Burge) returns 10 articles from the Intro to Jn 2:1-25 to the end of Jn 3. It spans 48 pages but skips sections that can be identified as out of the range! The PB DText only returns the Intro to Jn 2:1-25!

You get a much better result if you split the range i.e.

1/ John 2:23–3:16 in dtext (NIVAC John)

So you can't guarantee to capture an Overview/Introduction as there may be no milestones or they carry thru to the detailed comments.
