Improved "Add Versions" support in Search

We've added "Add Versions" support in Bible search on the web app, that's a bit different from how it works on the desktop app. What's better about it? What's worse? Do you even use this feature!?

Your feedback is vital as we consider what, if any of these changes we might also bring to the desktop.

Comparing it with the desktop implementation (see screenshot) it doesn't highlight search results in additional versions - is this coming?

And it looks like (nearly) going back to how this worked on desktop in L9. Is that a fair comment?

I do find this feature helpful and think what you are doing on the webapp would be easier, and more intuitive to use than the way this is currently implemented on desktop.

I noticed that as well.

Another thing that I noticed is the ability to move the columns AFTER the first one (which must stay put).

I didn't use it on the desktop because I didn't realize it was there! Hidden in plain sight I guess. I'll use it now.

I like the web app version first of all because I can recognize it because it says what it is and it's in a more visible location[:D]

2nd I like the drop down checkbox feature for selecting Bibles better than the type in search in the desktop version and it suggests Bibles I may forget I have.

I don't like that it doesn't highlight the search words in the other versions.

1. For my test I ran the search on "top Bible", then for add version in chose "top Bibles" - I didn't like either because the top Bible appeared twice which I consider a bug.

2. I think having the add version function in the results section rather than the search section is an improvement - that is where users naturally look for it.

3. I much prefer the desktop highlighting the results on all versions.

4. I don't like the web having only automatic formatting - the desktop ability to choose vertical or horizontal is important to me.

5. I prefer the ability to move columns on the desktop as I often reorder the columns based on the results of a text comparison.

Just to add my comments to Martha's

1. For my test I ran the search on "top Bible", then for add version in chose "top Bibles" - I didn't like either because the top Bible appeared twice which I consider a bug.

The Version being searched should not be duplicated i.e. ignore the selection in Add Versions.

This should also apply if multiple versions are being searched.

It changes with the Layout selected and space available. But there should be a Choice.

I couldn't catch it in a still shot but if you select a book in the books section you can drag-and-drop to a new location.

I thought I had missed a direct ordering of columns in the output. I know about the drag and drop in the menu.

I don't know whether we can bring that to web yet. But if we do use this design on desktop, we'll retain the current highlighting across all versions.

How you added versions on L9 desktop could be a bit cumbersome if you remember. You had to type in the Bible's abbreviation in a small text entry box, which could be a bit... finicky. Rearranging versions was also quite tricky. On L10 desktop we improved that, but in doing so, moved the functionality behind a rather abstract icon in a not-easy-to-find place.

This design is intended to make the feature much clearer and easier to use than both the current design and the L9 variant.

That's exactly what we were hoping for!

The two dropdowns are actually quite similar, except the desktop one shows collections and series before Bibles. Consequently, you might have to scroll a long way down to see the Bibles.

I agree, and we have a case to correct that.

Also agree. If we bring this to desktop, we won't lose that functionality.

Nope - even with Mark's hint it didn't occur to me to try that. I expected selection and sequence to be together. Perhaps if I used the mobile my expectations would be different. I did try drag-and-drop on the columns as my first attempt.

I did discover that functionality quite early as the down-arrow aroused my curiosity. However, some separation would be better - matching the design of Morph Query would be an improvement.

The functionality of the Add Versions button is confusing as it does not allow one to switch the display on/off, and only changes color on hover! The button and the down arrow perform the same function.

Both separation and arrow design for the column headers.

The Add Versions button background changes from Clear to Logos Blue on hover/click. As the button includes the down-arrow some separation would be advisable as these have distinct functions i.e. the button should enable/disable the columns, whilst the arrow enables the choice of columns.

We found that the split button has confused many users, which is why we've gone for this simpler alternative. I appreciate that makes it harder to turn multiple versions on/off together, but we think we have a better way to solve that problem.

This particular scenario is now fixed. If you search in a single version, but then add multiple versions, there won't be any duplication.

What we haven't done (deliberately, so far) is change the behavior if you search in multiple versions, and then also add multiple versions (e.g., you search in Top Bibles, then also add Top Bibles to Add Versions. We could remove the duplicates here, too. But if we did, the columns would no longer align as you scroll down the page. We're not sure whether that would be a problem or not.

There needs to be a button to automatically search all Bibles in your Library (of a particular language?), and display the top 5-10 that are the most unique compared to all the others. Or is there some way to already do that?

Also, is there a way to take a Greek Lemma and search through all Reverse Interlinears in your Library and report all the different ways it has been translated?
