Initial Layout

Hi,

I have a new computer and a Logos/Verbum upgrade, but unfortunately I am havng many problems, and I regret any inconvenience I am causing. I want to start at the beginning and systematically work through my approach, to make sure all is satisfactory.

First of all I had a large layout, but it was not working correctly, now a smaller one seems OK. Is there a max size for a layout? Can I check if my Logos and Verbum programs were correctly installed? There is a possibility my computer has a fault, and I may have changed options to facilitate studies. Can I check this, other than running virus software?

In the first instance I would like to resolve my initial concerns, so I can regain confidence.

Please help.

In this thread I am trying to get a solid foundation for my Logos studies, but first I need to establish a base line. I had problems with virtual filters, some menus and highlighting. Now I want to see if the problems are still there with my new layout.

At this stage I think I am making solid progress.

Since you don't detail what problem(s) you encounter in your new Logos/Verbum installation, one can't really help much.

After you installed Logos, did it open and run correctly and were you able to sign in with your logos account?
You mention you had a large layout but it wasn't working correctly ... what did not work correctly? was it already not working in your previous installation or it stopped working in your new installation? what in them layout did not work?
Or did it actually technically work correctly but you felt or feel that this large layout doesn't give you "correctly" what you would like to have in order to do what you would like to do? ....

If you can provide some more details, folks here with expertise on different aspects of Logos/Verbum may be able to provide suggestions and helpful input.

Over time, I have found that I am achieving much more by not trying "to cramp everything" for any type of study or project into one big layout and rather set up several layouts for particular types of project or study ... e.g. a layout for Bible reading, a layout for searches in Bible, a layout for studies of Greek NT, a layout for Bible(s) plus favorite commentary, etc. Assigning the layouts to quick links in the Favorite tool, I can then switch layouts with keyboard shortcut, or similarly one could utilize the shortcut bar for quick access to these layouts.

It may be advantageous to establish first what you would like to accomplish in a particular project or study and thus determine what resources and tools would be needed. Then you can set up a layout for that particular project and include these in different panes of a layout, link resources, etc.

As you set up your layout(s) you can also consider and add any helpful tools and make them more easily accessible via shortcuts, or opening them in small side panes (such as Favorites, Copy Bible Verses, Cited by, etc)

Some general ideas which hopefully prove to be helpful to establish a baseline

I thought you might mean this, but your question ("Is there a max size for a layout?") is unrelated. Your question isn't about size but about amount of resources (or tabs). Is there a limit to how many? Of course. What is that limit? Who knows. It will depend upon many factors including the specs of your computer and the kinds of tabs opened. Having a guide open will require much more memory than just having a single resource open. In other words, not all tabs are equal. Furthermore, having highlights, etc. turned on will also take up memory. You should not be worrying about these things unless you are having troubles and it is determined that you need to worry about them.

Correction: visual filters (not virtual filters).

These things are much more likely to cause problems than simply having a resource open.

There is no need to have many Bibles, commentaries etc. open if one uses the parallel resources feature. The parllel resources can be spun through or selected quite easily.

Adding to JT, regarding layout size, my regular layout has maybe 200 books, spread across 7 windows, plus 4 Text Comparisons, 4 dedicated search panels, 3 Cited By panels. and 2 MultiBook Displays.

That sounds like overkill, but everything is in its place .... for almost 15 years (Logos4 onwards). It hiccupped on a bug in Logos 10 at introduction, but else, seems almost bullet-proof (but not bug-proof).

The early app design for Logos layouts was quite good.

WOW ... I'm already confused just reading those numbers ... perhaps because I only have one monitor screen to work with? 7 windows far exceeds my ability to imagine how those could be displayed with all those open resources in a recognizable manner ? [:(]

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread, I am pleased it has met with general interest, as I was concerned that it might not be suitable.

I am now convinced that my new computer is working and that Logos/Verbum has been downloaded correctly. With this reassurance I can focus on a simple layout, as some issues I had are resolved thanks to contributors here.

Now the first concern that I want resolved involves highlights. I have three Bibles, RSV2CE, NABRE and NRSVCE and I want to highlights RSV2CE Ps 4:7.

In Visual Filters I have ticked for each of these three ‘Notes and Highlights’, ‘No Notebook’, ‘Notes and Highlights (Corresponding)’ and the second ‘No Notebook’.

I select in RSV2CE Ps 4:7 and click ‘Yellow’. I get both RSV2CE and NRSVCE correctly highlighted, but in NABRE Ps 4:8 (equivalent to Ps 4:7 in other Bibles) is highlighted, except for three words (But, they and have). With the advice I read here and after computer searches I am still in a quandary about highlighting the verse in all three Bible.

A second problem I have is about linking resources and it may be a computer problem. I want to get a resource in a Link Set. For example, I open RSV2CE and very briefly click the icon with 3 vertical dots to get the Link Sets. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The click needs to be very fast. Is it possible to get a longer/slower click to open a Panel Menu?

I hope I have explained my two concerns and will be able to get help in resolving them.

Don't know if this helps or not.... but I did a test sometime back... whereby I created a layout, set it as default layout and kept adding books to it and saving it then closing and opening Logos to see when the number of books in the layout had any noticeable affect on Logos. If I remember right, I got up around 40 books open in the layout before I noticed Logos had noticeable differences. 40 books in a layout is just too many for me to work with.... but it was just a test for me.

Edit: And all that may depend on your processor speed, amount of ram you have, how full your disc is....

Sounds like a lot, but easy to handle. The main window has the lexicons by language, and various Logos tools (library, searches, Text Comparison, etc). The remaining windows are by function, an OT layout, and NT layout, a window for commentaries, another for dictionaries, a joirnals window, and finally a reading window. The Mac then displays them visually.

I suppose I'm a visual person ... everything in it's place, and I know exactly where to find it ... basically everything is 1-2 cliks (window > panel). It's especially good in working with Accordance and Kindle.

It sounds to me like your highlight was attached to a selection rather than a verse reference. When you make a highlight attached to a selection, the application uses the data in the reverse interlinear to find the equivalent words in other resources (this is done as part of the "Corresponding" visual filter). However, not all words from one Bible have an equivalent in other Bibles. For example, in NABRE, if you open the Reverse Interlinear Pane, you will note that "But", "they", and "have" all contain a dot in the manuscript row. That means that those words were inserted and have not aligned words in the original language. That means that a "corresponding" highlight won't pick them up as part of the original highlight.

The work around for this is to attach your highlights to the verse reference instead, which will highlight the entire verse in all Bibles without the need for use of the Corresponding visual filter. Obviously this isn't helpful if you just want to highlight a portion of the verse.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to switch existing highlights from selection-attached to verse-attached, so you just need to be aware that gaps in the selection are expected and are a result of words that have been added to the text by translators.

This sounds to me like a fairly common mouse failure. I've had this happen on multiple mice, where they start sometimes registering a double click when you are just trying to click a single time. You might try another mouse and see if it resolves the problem.

Andrew has answered regarding physical mouse issues. Also try marginally increasing/decreasing panel width (only if you have a narrow panel on the right or left as this vertical border is more progressive). If that fails, use keyboard Alt+- (Alt with minus).

To link I can use Alt/’-‘ and to highlight I select in the context menu of all three Bible versions ‘reference’ and hence I get the highlighting I want.

I regret the trouble, but I am delighted my issues are sorted.
