When I search preachingTheme:"God's Love" I only get 14 results on the desktop. I have reindexed and it is only giving me 14 results. Any thoughts?

It appears to be very selective with 14 out of 3204 results[:)] Does this happen:-

    • only with NASB95?
    • only for that Theme  e.g. preachingTheme:Love (1641x)?
    • only for preaching Themes  e.g. figurativeLanguageTerm:Love (57x)

I trust you only reindexed the NASB95!?

    It happens with any Bible.

preachingTheme:Love only gets me 75 results in 75 verses

    FLT:Love is 56 results in 41 verses

I get the same also in multiple versions.

Even though the theme "God's Love" is present in Gen 17:1, running a search for it from that verse doesn't include it in the search results.

I'm running 28.0 beta 4 - Ryland are you on the stable or beta version?

And I've just tried the search on a different computer running 27.3 and I get the full set of 3,204 results.

I got just the 14 results on Mac but the full set on Windows.

So it sounds either like a beta issue - in which case we need to cross-post it in the beta forum - a Mac-specific issue or some strange conditition that is affecting some systems and not others.

And I know Dave above asked about reindexing - I didn't get the chance to do that and won't be able to until later today.

Ryland - in addition to my question about stable / beta are you running Logos on Windows or Mac?

I was on the latest Beta version on a PC. I think the mystery is getting solved as to a cause! I'm reinstalling and going back to the stable version. I found out it would not let me search my custom labels either.

    Thanks Ryland

I've flagged this in the beta forum.

    Graham,

I set the channel back to stable, uninstalled, reinstalled, and indexed and am still only getting the 14 results. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ryland

I set the channel back to stable, uninstalled, reinstalled, and indexed and am still only getting the 14 results.

Which version did you end up with when you reinstalled?

With 28.0 being released to the stable channel yesterday it is possible, if a bug was introduced in the beta cycle, that you ended up with the same version when reinstalling on stable?

I have now reindexed the ESV and the problem continues there

Yesterday on my Windows computer running 27.3 I got the full set of 3,204 results

Today, after upgrading it to 28.0 I get 14.

It looks to me as though there was an issue introduced in 28.0!

With v28, we've made changes to the way that preaching themes return verses.

With every Preaching Theme, there are two different types of Bible references attached. You can see them if you run a Sermon Starter Guide, and look in the Passages section.

The first is Key Passages as this suggests, this contains the most important passages on this subject, and it's what you're now seeing in search.

The second is Pericopes. These are sections of the biblical text that echo the preaching theme. Previously these were included in search, but now they're excluded.

We excluded them because they're very broad. It's probably useful to know that the story of Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision in Genesis 17:1-14 tells us something about God's love. But is every individual verse from that pericope really relevant? Most users thought not.

For example, verse 14 says, "Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant." That verse is in a story that touches on the theme of God's love, but it's hard to argue that the verse itself is about that topic.

And because preaching themes often get merged with equivalent topics, these problems didn't just impact people searching for preaching themes, they impacted people searching for topics, too.

That's why we removed pericopes from passage list search. We hope that it helps you to find the most relevant entries rather than getting overwhelmed with hundreds or sometimes even thousands of entries.

If you still want all the verses, including pericopes, you can view those from the Sermon Starter Guide, either by opening them in your preferred Bible, or by saving them as a passage list.

I'm sorry this change didn't make it into the release notes. I'll get that fixed.

Your feedback is welcome, as always.

Makes a lot of sense, Mark! Thank you for the clarity.

    Hi Mark

    Thanks for the explanation.

I understand now where we are seeing different results and I think I like it!

I am surprised it wasn't flagged during the beta process - I think there would have been some interesting discussions.

One thing that does seem strange is that I can now right-click on a word, locate a preaching theme in the context menu and search for it in my Bible and not get returned the verse I clicked in the first place.

I guess we're not actually searching the label we're searching the key passages associated with the label but that's not shown in any way in the context menu.

Is this the only time in Logos where this happens? If so, it could cause some confusion.....

I agree. I'm sure Dave has an opinion!

Yes, you're right about that. We'll give that some thought.

A major improvement that might make Preaching Themes actually usable for me.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

I agree about flagging it during beta.

Overall, it's about time...[:)] You presented my  reasons quite well in your first reply[:D]

But I think it could be broadened along the line of  (sense:="to love (care)" OR sense:="love (affection)") NEAR  (person:God OR person:Jesus)

    .

But there are some inequities. Books Search (# results/# resources):-

    [Narrow]--> preachingTheme:"God's Love"  772/102    topic:"God’s Love"  1/1  [Default]-->772/102  (not associated with topic)

    [Narrow]--> preachingTheme:"Love"              662/86      topic:"Love"  1227/97     [Default]-->1646/114 (uses both datatypes)

Factbook's  Search (under More) reflects the above, but "love" is not suggested as a Concept!?
