Am I doing something wrong when using NEAR as an operator in Logos' search features? It says unexpected operator See picture below.

NEAR is a shorthand for WITHIN X WORDS where the engine is counting between two instances.  You'd put 'gospel of john' in quotes to create an instance.  Or add another operator like AND after gospel (depending on your search)..

This would be a good example where Mark's simplifying would help ... as the parse procedes, the assumptions are fixed.

Atonement NEAR "Gospel of John" works.

Atonement NEAR Gospel of John requires an operator between the other terms.  Atonement Gospel of John is OK because it is parsed with AND as the operator between the terms.   Atonement NEAR "Gospel of John" is two terms with NEAR, and is probably what you meant.

Thanks everyone. Now another question. How can I find when the term "atonement" is used by a biblical reference i.e. John 1:1-18?

I don't understand - the word atonement  does not appear in John 1:1-18.

Please clarify what you are trying to do.

    Edit:

If you mean you are trying to find where the word atonement appears in discussions on John 1:1-18 try the search string below in a Books search

    atonement IN milestone:bible:"John 1:1-18"

Thanks Graham. I want to find wherever the term atonement and similar theories are found in books discussing the Gospel of John. How can I do that?

    How can I do that?

As per my post above, if you do a milestone search you can find wherever a word is mentioned where a commentary is examing a particular passage

of if you want to search all books that are looking at John's Gospel, you can use subject:john to filter your books to just those

and then search for the word in that set of books
