Paul and Hellenistic Philosophy
I'm trying to determine how much influence the Hellenistic philosophers of Jesus' day had on Paul as a teacher of Christianity. Although Jesus understood the OT literally, he used it metaphorically, but that is a different question. In Acts 17 Paul meets adherents of two philosophical groups, the Epicureans and the Stoics. Both groups play a critical role in the philosophical background of the New Testament. I am trying to determine what role this played in his writing of the Epistle to the Romans. Does anyone have an idea of how to find this out?

It looks like you might want something like Paul and the Giants of Philosophy: Reading the Apostle in Greco-Roman Context.

By the way, the author of the above book, docent Niko Huttunen, is my colleague nowadays, since he´s moved to the church from academia. We work in the same church or parish as pastors.
In it he discusses, for example, how the epicurean concept of the strong and the weak might have affected st. Paul´s thinking in Romans 14.
