CUSTOM HIGHLIGHTING PALETTES

Hi y'all

Here's a heads-up ... about CUSTOM HIGHLIGHTING PALETTES.  I used all caps because when I searched the Forum for info about this, the info was incomplete and scattered ... especially regarding how to SHARE them via Faithlife Groups.  That entire process is described in this post.

The adventure began when I *finally* figured out not only how to create the various styles, but also a cool way of arranging them for "Layered" use ... each Palette of Styles represents a Marking Theme (Sys Theo, Literary style, etc) ... and each Style in that Palette is assigned to a given Category in that Theme (Ecclesiology, Hamartiology, etc).

So, I created a LOT of standardized Custom Palettes (15 so far) with many useful variations, specifically designed so that I can apply multiple Layers from different Palettes. I did a lot of testing to see how effectively different styles could be used together so that they could all be seen and not blot out one another.

I've posted explanations of the general task and results in the FaceBook "Logos Users Group". But just in case you're not a member of that, here is a synopsis of how I discovered I could SHARE THE PALETTES (and methodology) with y'all, for FREE ...

It was a real "adventure" learning how to SHARE the Custom Palettes with others (Logos Support had no clue, and the Forum info was scattered) ... so all the time and thought that went into creating the Palettes could benefit others with similar interests.

It turns out that the trick to SHARING those Palettes (and other things) is to create a Faithlife Group that they can be uploaded to. So, that's what I've done. I could have uploaded to another group, like the universal Logos upload area, but the Palettes would have gotten lost in the bushes, and any explanatory posts I made to describe how to use them, etc, would also be lost.

If you want to do this yourself (ie share your Palettes or other Logos document files you create on your local PC with other folks), I've provided the STEPS to doing so (afaik, this is not fully documented anywhere in this Forum), just after the "PS" at the end of this long post.

So ... a new Faithlife Group "JimDean-StudyStuff" has been born. It's a free Public group but you'll need to become a Follower (or Member, if you wish), to see and download the Custom Palettes.

First go to the link below, become a Follower, and read the various posts (the later posts sometimes contradict bits of the earlier ones, since I was learning as I went through the process). The Pinned post shows fifteen snapshots of the contents of the Layering "Theme" Palettes ... the most recent "Combo Mobile Fun" palette was added today ... see the "GOOD NEWS" post about that.

To get there, click on this or paste it in your browser ... ENJOY!

Once you're a Follower (or Member), you can come back here and click the next link below, any time, to see all the currently uploaded Palettes (or other file types I likely will add in the future). OR, from within the Activity page, click the upper-left Menu and go to Bible Study > Logos Documents to see the same thing as the link below takes you to.

You ALL have my PERMISSION to use these. All I ask is that if/when you share them with other people, you point the recipients to JimDean-StudyStuff group, SO THAT they have access to all the instructions and ideas and posts there. Thanks, I hope this helps out a LOT of people.

You'll be hearing a lot more from me, in that new Group, as I add more info re marking schemes ... Theme and Category assignments, etc ... and also automated filters for marking syntactical, etc stuff, as I learn how best to do that. Many plans in store!

PS: For those who like me ALSO enjoy marking physical print Bibles ... I've been working on "parallel" marking schemes and colors and marking tools, for use with my two wonderful Schuyler Wide Margin Quentel ESV & NASB, and my Nelson Wide Margin 1-col, ICR NKJV. I'm posting info about all that in some other FB groups ... reply to this post if you want links.

Instructions for SHARING CUSTOM FILES with others ... & optionally CREATING A GROUP.

1. Create the Palettes, or Filters, or Collections, or whatever you want to share, on your PC Logos.

2. Now, go online to Your documents (logos.com) ("https://documents.logos.com") to see the online "cloud" copy of YOUR custom files, which are automatically sync'd with the cloud (no steps needed for that).  You'll see your files there.

3. If you want to create your own new Faithlife Group (sort of like a FB page),go to Start a Group - Faithlife ("https://faithlife.com/groups/new), and select the TYPE of group you want to create (many choices).  Then click NEXT, fill in the fields, click NEXT and so on to completion.  Once the group is created, you'll likely want to edit the Settings, notably Group Features & Permissions, to fit your needs.  Finally, SAVE the link to your group in your Browser shortcuts.  Voila!  Move on to Step 4.

4. If you want to share some or all of the cloud-copies of your custom Files with an EXISTING Faithlife group (including the one you created in Step 3, if any), hover over each file one at a time, and click "Actions" on the far right, then click "Publish", then check boxes for whatever Group(s) you want to share the files with.  Once you've shared the files, I highly recommend that you POST on that group what they are, and how to use them.

5. IMPORTANT note ... once the files have been shared on the cloud to a Faithlife Group, IF YOU CHANGE that file (in my current case, a given Custom Highlighting Palette), then the changes will immediately and automatically be echoed from your PC's copy up to the linked copy of the file in that Group.  You won't need to "re-share" it, UNLESS (important!) you modify the NAME of the Palette-file in any way.  Doing that breaks the connection and that file is no longer shared with any groups ... even if it was an accident and you immediately change it back.  You'll need to go back to step 4 and re-share that newly-named file with the desired Group(s).

6. Final note ... once any other Logos user DOWNLOADS that file, their copy is *separate*. Any later changes you make to the file, or delete it, etc, will NOT affect the Group's file.  Also, any changes that THEY make to THEIR PC's copy will not affect the one in the cloud.  Logos did a good job of design and coding on this.
