Hi Logos-community,

I am living Germany and just found the possibility of purchasing a German silver edition:

Can you please help me on identifying the appropriate “language version“? How do both version differ? Is there any comparison of the English and German version?

If you mainly read German books, I recommend the German silver edition. The regular Logos base packages don't contain books in German.

No, unfortunately not. Or: yes, but be aware they are localized.

This means that the actual functionality should be the same (I haven't checked for all of them), but you will have German language versions of interactives, guides and tools, and also of the many many datasets that run Logos in the background. If this is a once-for-all buy, this won't matter much. If on the other hand you will want to buy any of the many English language base packages, there's no dynamic pricing rebate for functionalities you own in German language (and vice versa if you want to go "up" in the German-language base packages, or want to buy another package in the future).

No, the features are different.

For the Logos 10 Silver German feature set:

Total value if sold separately:$4,251.93

For the Logos 10 Silver feature set:

Total value if sold separately:$6,419.91

The German BP has 164 datasets, the English BP, 109 datasets.

Both BP have 74 features, however, they're different. Just at a first glance, the German BP includes the translation tool for the desktop edition.

I hesitate to give a final recommendation. Like you, I'm fluent in both English and German. I see the benefits of both the German and the English base packages. And there's also the German academic silver BP. After I received my birthday coupon last year, I have triple Gold now, as I upgraded the non academic German Base Package from Bronze to Gold.

For me, the non academic German packages are the least useful, since they contain a lot of resources that have been translated from English into German, many of which I had already owned as part of Logos 10 Gold, or previous versions.

Since you're going for Silver though, and not for Gold, I have to point out the increased number of datasets included in the German package. It's not just a few datasets you'd get on top, but about 60% more compared to the English Silver package. Datasets make a huge difference when working directly on the text. Plus, the translation tool is a big big bonus in the German Silver package. It translates Hebrew and Latin on the fly (no Greek and Aramaic yet, unfortunately), and of course the occasional French and Spanish texts that might pop up in random resources. I suspect that the summarization tool is going to be tied to the translation feature, and that tool does cover Greek and Aramaic, which means, you can summarize all ancient texts on the fly.

To find the right package for you, you'd have to ask yourself what you're going to do with your Logos.

I attend seminary in the US, so I naturally need a solid foundation of resources in English. My degree doesn't include any languages, so I can skip Logos 10 Academic (English), which is almost entirely focused on languages. The "normal" Gold BP already has a lot of academic resources. That's one of the major differences between the German and English packages. The German packages are separated between non-academic and academic resourses, while on the English side of things, mainly the language heavy resources are outsourced to the academic packages.

The reason for that, I suspect is, that I have the impression that English academic authors try to write in a way that their books can be understood by a very broad audience, with or without theology degree. Therefore, academic books can easily be included in the non academic packages, since they benefit everyone, including lay people.

German academic authors, on the other hand, have the tendency to write in a way so that lay people have a hard time understanding their works. Including them in non academic base packages would make no sense.

So you've got a lot of "easy" stuff in the non academic packages (commntaries for lay people, commentaries translated from English, monographs, counseling resources etc.) The academic packages then contain the more technical commentaries, church history resources, systematic theologies, but also a lot of primary texts such as the LXX, church fathers, Josephus, Philo, Augustine.

Long story short: every choice of base package has some advantages, but also some downsides. The one thing you shouldn't do though, after you've decided for one of the base packages, then to start purchasing individual items from the other base packages to "fill in the blanks". Buying individual items is about 100 times less bang for the buck in direct comparison with buying a whole package. Better put some money aside each month until you can afford a second BP, or make use of Faithlife's payment plan program. Or use the payment plan to begin with, for both Silver packages. I've just tested it out, that's a payment of $135 for 12 months. Or $153 for triple Silver. And don't forget to use the 20% promo code which may not be shared here, but can be found all over the internet...

I think Jan gave excellent advise for your choices. I personally like to have a broad library, so due to the "dynamic pricing" (you pay only for the portion of a package that is new to you) it is sometimes very affordable to get lower level base packages from denominational streams, such as the Starter packages (Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist etc). This of course only makes sense in the English side of things. The German catalog is much smaller, which may be the reason they put more functionalities into Silver, as Jan found.

If you think over buying a specific resource, it definitely helps to look on the product page whether it is included in any bundles.

When I am about to purchase a BP, I will consider your thoughts. This is highly appreciated.

Currently I struggle with the mobile version of Logos. I only use an iPad at home. I have started some threads here in the forum about different issues and questions regarding functionality. And it always ends with the limitation of the mobile version.

I am willing to pay the money for a silver BP or even a gold BP, but not for the lack of functionalities on my mobile app. This is why I use Logos only with no purchased BP to investigate the limitations further.

Any comments or recommendations to this one?
