Smart Tags Problem

I have Word 2007 on Windows 7 64Bit, I followed the setup from the Wiki article, but they still don't work. Are there any issues with 64Bit OS? Does anyone have them working on 64Bit Windows 7 with Word 2007?

I installed the new Beta, went over to Word 2007 to follow the instructions to activate the use of the Smart Tags. Everything works fine. I'm running a 64bit Win7. Perhaps there is a problem with Word?

For those who have this problem with Word 2007 - when you type for example John 3:16 - are you hitting the space bar or just stopping your typing after the 6? If the latter try the former and let us know if you get the purple underline then.

    Kevin,

In the Add-Ins section of the MS 2007 "Word Options" do you see "Logos Bible Software 4 (Bible References) under the "Active Application Add-ins?

It appears to be case sensitive so try Jn 3.2 and not jn 3.2.

I have Word 2007 and it's not working for me either. I've enabled SmartTags by following the instructions, and the checkboxes are still on when I open Word Options back up again to double-check, and Logos Bible Software 4 (Bible references) is listed among the active add-ins, as it should be:

    image

I type a space after John 3:16 and no purple underline shows up, nor any image icon. I've got Logos 4.1 Beta 9 running. I've tried closing and restarting them both, and still no dice. Would log files help with this? I would think probably not since the code to do something with the typing in Word isn't even coming from logos4.exe but should be in L4SmrtTg.dll. But how can I tell if the DLL is even getting loaded and called? Does it generate its own log files?

And your Smart Tag window looks like Step 5 in the Article?

I had to persevere with a few references + space before it worked - it seemed like an intelligent learning process!

Yup, except I don't have Outlook e-mail recipients turned on, but I don't want them on, and that shouldn't make any difference:

An intelligent learning process for you or for the software to learn your habits? It still hasn't "learned" how to do this for me, in spite of me having typed in all kinds of references with spaces before and after, done as abbreviations or book name fully spelled out, with proper capitalization all the time. Sigh! Fortunately, I'm just testing this feature, it's not one I ever relied on in L3, so I'm not too put out by the fact that it doesn't work for me. But I'd sure like to know why, in case it's something Logos needs to fix.

In Word Options under the Advanced Tab scroll down to "Show Document Control" and be sure the "Show Smart Tags" option is checked. Do you get a response at all if you hover the pointer over the scripture reference?

One other thing we need to look at which would be strange, but I noticed in Kevin's screen grab he had V3 Smart Tags installed, as have I. Rosie did not. Could this be an issue? It be interesting to see if those who cannot get Smart Tags to work do not have V3 Smart Tags installed.

No joy here.... here's my setup. Tried all the suggestions in this thread. No joy... As you can see, it APPEARS to be installed correctly (right side), but there are no underlines (left side) or smart tag menus.

Only the L3 Smart Tag works (right above the L4 Smart Tag, unchecked at the moment).

    Bill,

Looking at your setup, one thing that stands out different than mine and could very possibly have Word confused is that you have both the Logos and the Time Smart Tags checked. It may be looking at the scripture reference as both scripture and time, try unchecking the Time Smart Tag and going through the process.

Just wondering have you tried temporary disabling the other Active Addins from Adobe and the others. The only reason I ask is that I only have the two Logos Smart Tags and Outlook running. Wonder if one of the 3rd Party addins could be preventing it.

Good try, but no cigar. I just disabled all the other add-ins except Logos SmartTags and restarted Word, and still no SmartTags. I've tried "training" it some more. Nada. Could any other Word options be interfering with it? AutoCorrect? Check spelling while you type? I tried turning those both off and it didn't help.

I tried enabling some other SmartTag (Dates) and that worked. So it's just the Logos Biblical references that aren't working. I wonder if I have the right version of L4SmrtTg.dll? Here's what I've got:

Just wonder if its worth checking the "Security" tab to see if you have access to the DLL. Can't think why you wouldn't but worth checking.

Bill ~  Try uninstalling Logos Smart Tags for Libronix DLS 3 from Control Panel. If that alone doesn't work, close all Microsoft Office programs, then run the Logos4.msi file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Install\Installers. Choose Repair if prompted.

    Yes, I do.

Kevin ~ Try the same thing I suggested to Bill. Try uninstalling Logos Smart Tags for Libronix DLS 3 from Control Panel. If that alone doesn't work, close all Microsoft Office programs, then run the Logos4.msi file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Install\Installers. Choose Repair if prompted. It might not hurt to rename the Logos 4 Smart Tag DLL first. Path is shown in your screenshot.

Ok, I was playing around a little bit this morning.

    1. I had both V3 & V4 Logos Smart Tags active.

    2. If I did not have Logos already open and used a Smart Tag it'd open V3

    3. Disabled V3 Smart Tag in Word and restarted Word

    4. V4 Smart Tags would not work

    5. Open V4 then the V4 Smart Tags work perfectly.

So it appears the main difference based on this quick research is that unlike the V3 Logos Smart Tags, V4 has to already be open to recognize the scripture references. For those that could not get the Smart Tags to work, did you have Logos 4 open?

Edit: Also If I have V4 closed and type Scripture references in Word, when I open Logos 4 they are recognized within seconds.

Correct. Here's an excerpt from the Logos Smart Tags support article referenced in the Release Notes:  You must be running Logos 4.1 (at the same time as Microsoft Office) for the smart tag recognizer to work.

I also began playing around and noticed when Smart Tags worked and did not work.

    DOES NOT WORK:

    • When Logos is not running (okay, that is obvious now).
    • When the "Label text with smart tags" check box is NOT selected. (this feature is found in the AutoCorrect dialog box).

I have found the smart tags consistently "not work" until I have the box selected.

I should add that the Smart Tag does not "show" for me in Word 2010.  I just have to right click on the text of the verse, then select "additional actions" and that gives me the replacement (see below).  If you are waiting for the indicator (like in L3) you may not see it.

    Hi Fred,

I'm using Office 2007 (I'll try to remember to add that to my signature).

Here are my options on right click over any of those scripture references:

    image

As you can see, no actions. Nor is there any Smart Tag menu that pops up, no matter where I wave the cursor.

In case it was just slow, I opened L4 & closed all but NIV. Then I opened the Word test document with references (the same document in which I'd turned on L4 Smart Tags).

I rechecked the document. No joy.

I left it open in the background in case "after a few seconds" it'd find them. No joy.

L4 Smart Tags do not appear to be working, though they do appear to be installed (& L3 smart tags now uninstalled).

I'm at a loss what else to try before reinstalling L3 smart tags.

    Hi Melissa,

Per posts above, I've already tried these suggestions & they didn't work.

But since the L4 Smart Tag APPEARS to be installed,  I got to wondering if some Word option wasn't permitting it to run... so I tried these in Advanced Options, too. No joy, but here's what I tried:

    1. Enable all macros (normally, I only permit signed macros to run in Word).
    2. Trust Access to the VBA project object model (normally, I run with this unchecked).

As before, no joy... Anything else you can think of?

Nope on all questions. I do use templates, but they're templates for Word 2003 compatible, macro-enabled .doc files (too few folks I work with have 2007, never mind 2010). So as soon as Word starts, I change to one of those templates. The Smart Tag document you saw in the background (my test document) was based on that startup document.

If any Office apps were open when Beta 9 was installed, it's possible that the Logos Smart Tags would appear installed, but not work properly. I wasn't sure whether running the .msi would work. You might try closing everything, including Outlook, then re-registering the DLL:

    1. Unregister the DLL: click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 /u C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Logos4\System\L4SmrtTg.dll in the Open dialog box, and then click OK. (Path will be C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Logos4\System.)
    2. Register the DLL: click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Logos4\System\L4SmrtTg.dll in the Open dialog box, and then click OK.

In both document formats, it'll even recheck the document for smart tags, but L4 smart tags are just not responding... More we can try?

Are you running Logos 4 or Word with elevated permissions? (I.e., with UAC turned on, right-clicking the program and choosing Run as administrator, or checking "Run this program as an administrator" in the Compatibility tab.)

Windows Vista (and later) prevent programs running at one "integrity level" from interacting with programs running at a different level, so the cross-process communication needed to recognise passages and replace the smart tag with a Bible verse will be disallowed by the OS if either program is run elevated.

(Logos 4 is designed to run as a regular user, not with administrative privileges, so we strongly recommend that you not run it elevated.)

If you're running both Logos 4 and Word not as administrator, and you're still not getting it to work, I've created a special debug build that will write a log file which may help us identify the issue 4807.L4SmrtTg.zip.

First, close all Office programs. I've noticed on my machine that Office 2010 sometimes keeps running in the background even after I've closed all the open windows, so you may want to reboot to get to a clean state. (Or use Task Manager to kill winword.exe, etc.) To install it, unzip the attached file to a temporary folder on your hard drive. The easy route is to copy it over the existing "Logos4\System\L4SmrtTg.dll". (Alternatively, you can run "regsvr32 C:\Where\You\Put\It\L4SmrtTg.dll" to install it in a different location.)

Run Word again, enter some text containing Bible references and press Enter to finish the paragraph. In Office 2010, right-click a reference in the text and expand the "Additional Actions" menu. In Office 2003/2007, simply finishing the paragraph should be sufficient to trigger recognition.

Open "My Documents\Logos Log Files\SmartTag.log" and see what it says. In normal circumstances, you should see the following:

    Logging started at 2010-08-26T02:41:26.
    SmartTagInitialize called by Word.Application.14
Smart tag name is: Bible references
Smart tag description is: Recognizes Bible references.
    Smart tag count is: 1
Recognize called for text: John 3:16
    Found Bible reference: Bible.Jn3.16
    Smart tag shutting down.

If you're getting something different, upload your SmartTag.log file and we'll take a look.

    Bradley,

Just to be clear. I am running both Logos4 and word with a User who is an administrator, but not running either of them as Administrator. Is this what you meant?

At any rate I copied your version over the existing L4SmrTg.dll and when I enter my text with bible references in my word document much to my surprise it now works.

However, I do not see any log file. Is this DLL a keeper?

    Thanks

    Bradley,

A little more info... it appears to work only if Logos4 is running. Is this the way it should work? I thought I remembered from smart tags in the past I did not have to have logos running for it to work so, I have been testing without Logos running.

I suspect this has been my issue all along.
