Is this a solid state device?

Experience has shown that having an SSD provides a significant performance boost.

I'd look at that first - then there are varying views as to whether 8GB of RAM is enough.

    I have 8Gb RAM.

Do you think I should get more Ram? How much?

    Model ST500LM021-1KJ152

This is a conventional hard drive with rotating heads.

I expect that the best way to increase performance is to replace / augment this with a solid state disk with at least 512GB of space.

I note that from what you say above you aren't particularly experience in these areas - do you have someone who can assist in working on this?

@Philip, since you say are no computer wizz, I'd suggest you don't try to replace your internal HD, but buy an external SSD which connects through one of the USB ports. This should definitely improve performance.

    These are the recommended specs:

    Windows

    • Most recent stable release of Windows 10 or Windows 11
    • Latest generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (or AMD equivalent)
    • 16GB of RAM
    • 512GB NVMe SSD
    • 60GB Free space -- internal SSDMay require more space depending on the size of the library.
    • 2560 x 1440 resolution display
    • 1GB+ DirectX11 Compatible Video Card
    • Highspeed broadband internet speed connection

    (see: https://support.logos.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007554992-Recommended-Hardware-and-Software)

All items you listed list the RAM as 800MHz, read further to understand the risks:

    CPU

Intel or AMD are recommended because of the mathematical capabilities of these CPU's. Celeron's can't compete.

    HDD or SSD

HDD's normally run at 1700rpm on power and 1500rpm on battery. This makes a big difference on a laptop. SSD's doesn't have that problem, they are just out of this world for someone used to HDD's.

Logos make use of a lot of databases and files. This indicates that it needs to access the hard drive a lot because the complete application can't be loaded into RAM. Finding a balance between the drive and RAM is the secret for a healthy environment.

    RAM

Windows use at least 4GB RAM for itself, the rest are used by other applications. Many argue that 8GB RAM is fine, but 16GB is better. You will notice the difference when working with two or more apps open at the same time.

The Mhz of RAM is very important. Consider 2333 Mhz and above. Bigger number respresent faster RAM. If you have two different RAM modules and the one is faster than the other the system will fallback to the speed of the slowest.

Upgrading RAM and keeping the hdd won't be as good as upgrading to ssd and keeping the RAM. If virtual memory are used by your system the SSD will provide faster speeds while the HDD will slow down the system.

I would ignore all the help offered here and not spend any more money on this obsolete computer. The processor is 10 year old technology. The Intel skylake architechture used was designed for Mechanical hard drives and will not be able to take full advantage of the speed of a modern SSD.

Since you are using close to 4TB of space, you would need to get an SSD at least 5TB which is going to cost ~$300+. It is not worth putting this much money into a 10 year old laptop.

Wait for a good sale and get a new one [H]

4TB? Where did he say that?

~$300 for a 5TB SSD external drive or for a laptop with 5TB of SSD storage? If the latter, things must have changed a whole lot from when I bought my laptop in Jan 2023. I paid close to US$800 (incl. tax, and and after a US$320.00 discount) for a 512GB SSD HP laptop.

    ~$300 for a 5TB SSD external drive ...

I looked at prices at BestBuy.com for a quality name brand Sata *Internal* SSD. Logos is not supported on *external* drives. There are many threads discussing this.

Load logos onto an external hard drive?

A modern laptop with 1 TB SSD drive and 16 GB memory would be far better.

There are problems with an external drive being connected to a portable laptop and maintaining the connection (you don't want to disconnect at the wrong time).

1 TB would be adequate for the OP, assuming that the internal drive can be replaced and that the OP is capable of cloning the existing drive.

I don't know one way or other about external drives or what is supported (never had much reason to be interested no matter how many threads discuss them), but since you were advising him to get a new computer, I wondered if someone could really buy a computer with a 5TB SSD for only $300.00. Now that you've confirmed it is only the drive, the price makes more sense to me.

I made a mistake when I read his drive information. He would only need a 500GB or so SSD. These could be obtained for a lot less. My tendency would still be to get a new system, it is likely the MB only supports Sata 3

As far as external drives go, you can search the forum. It is technically possible to do but not recommended or supported.

Good move Philip - now don't let upfront price have too much influence on your purchase decision. A new laptop should last five to seven years if need for professional work. Make a list of all the expected costs of the various machines over that term. Subscription to services needed / not needed etc. Find the 'Total Cost of Ownership' over which ever period you decide and let that be your guiding light.

There is some guidance at https://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers - including showing where the files are held

Although, if you don't have any network limitations, it may be simpler to simply install Logos and allow it to download all your files / documents.

The only things you might not get then are Personal Books and they could be handled separately.

Not that I am aware of

I suggest simplying installing the software on the new laptop, logging in and letting Logos download itself - you can start this process at https://www.logos.com/get-started
