Hi. I think it has been a while since someone has posted about unnecessarily vague forum post subject lines. Rather than simply complain that these riddles and mysteries waste users' time, I would like to detail the benefits of complete and informative subject liness for everyone, and offer a tip or two.
- Search Sidebar - Once you have typed your Subject line and have moved to the Description box, note the search sidebar on the right. If you are reporting a bug or other problem, and your Subject line has adequate detail, you might find an existing post with answers.
- Busy MVPs / Other Reliable Users - Knowledgable Logos users are likely to be the busier users. Help them scan the Topics screen or their feed readers more efficiently to spot their areas of expertise.
- Logos Staffers - Ditto. A handful of Logos staffers monitor the forums.
- New Users - New users aren't familiar with jargon abbreviations, inside jokes, etc.
- The Rest of Us - All of the above.
- Google / DuckDuck Searches of site:community.logos.com - Think about some (even yourself) searching a couple of years later and seeing a pageful of nonsensical subject lines for stray posts that might contain a word or two of your query.
- Avoid Two-Word Mysteries - "Lectionary's Here!!!!" (note annoying multiple punctuation). Which one?
- 'BUG' / 'SUGGESTION' - All Caps at the beginning for these types of posts is already in common use, but included here for completeness. The 'BUG' might get the attention of a Logos staffer more quickly.
Since you've read this far, it means you've bought the book, so here are additional general post tips:
- Forum Signature - It's a good idea to have a forum signature that has the operating system(s) you use. This information, paired with the sub-forum containing the post, can give other users a context for your comments on a post. To create or edit your signature, find your screen name at the top-right and click 'Edit' next to that. Scroll down to find 'Signature' and there's a text edit box. When finished, scroll down and click 'Save'. (Yes, this page has an explicit save button. On other pages we're supposed to 'just know' it saves automatically. Go figure.)
- Device & Operating System Specifications on Bug, Problem, or Question Posts - To expedite an answer, suggestion, or solution, it is best to provide: Your device's specific brand and model; Your device's operatting system name; Your device's operating system version number (down to the dot upgrade); The Logos version. (Remeber, it's not 8, 9, 10 any longer; it's 31, 32, etc.)
