AI search and language settings

The new AI search works only in the same language as in application settings. I own resources both in German and in English. When the UI is set to German (my usual preference), and I enter a search term or question in German, everything works fine. I only get results from my German resources though.

When I enter a search term in English, all I get is garbage.

In order to get results from my English resources, I have to change the language settings first! It also means I can never have German and English search results in the same session. I'd have to change language settings back and forth.

Therefore, we need some sort of language selector in the AI search, or even better, like ChatGPT does, automatically answer in the same language that the question is asked.

(A further step toward perfecting the AI search would be receiving results from all resources irrespective the language, and the option to translate them or get a summary in the current display language from the search results overview.)

We're sorry that Smart Search isn't yet optimized for bilingual users. Because the new search engine tries to understand the semantic meaning of queries and results, getting the language right is much more important that it is in the old engine. We've been trying different approaches for a couple of months, but it's turned into a bigger problem that we anticipated –  mostly because automatically detecting the language of search queries is really hard (we can detect the language of whole paragraphs pretty well, but when many queries are just a few words long, it's much harder). We think we have a way forward, but it might not be ready during the beta period, I'm afraid.

Good to see that we independently arrive at similar conclusions.

What did you do to search unowned books? I can only get results from books that I own.

No need to apologize! The new feature is great.I only provided feedback how to make it even greater.

The All Search searches all books - including unowned ones - while the Books Search just searches owned ones.

We're working on a better solution, but in the meantime, if you create a collection of only English books, the search engine will then give you good results for English search terms.

I reported this same issue earlier in the forum: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/221277.aspx

We've made improvements to English language detection in Smart Search. When using non-English UI, Smart Search now detects when a query is in English, and ranks English results appropriately. (It will not, as suggested in this thread, attempt to interpret and answer the question from resources in all languages.) This change is live in both the desktop and web apps.

Note that does not effect other language combinations; the best way to get results for another (non-English) language that differs from your app language is still to create a collection of books in that language. For example, If you use the app in Portuguese, and you want to use Smart Search for a Spanish query, search a collection of Spanish books.

    Feedback and testing needed:
How often does Smart Search promote results in a language you were not expecting? How well does it work for one-word queries?
