Jews in Synagogue

Several passages in the Fourth Gospel indicate that a massive upheaval occurred. This disruption resulted in Jews who believed in Jesus being prevented from entering the synagogue. There is no proof of what caused this exclusion. I investigated The Religion and Worship of the Synagogue: An Introduction to the Study of Judaism from the New Testament Period and J. Louis Martyn's History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel, but I wanted to understand the range of viewpoints on the subject. Any advice on how to do so is appreciated.

Sorry, but you are looking for simple answers to complex questions. Groups like the Ebionites surviving into the 5th century implies some continuing blurring of the Christian/Jewish dividing line. I have read of implied mingling of Christians in synagogues in Syria and Egypt a century later ... by inference not with proof. No search will give you anything more than "sound bytes" as to one person's evaluation of the sparse evidence. Read entire books on the general topic of the relationship between Christians and Jews in the first 5 centuries or so after Christ e.g.

After Jesus Before Christianity: A Historical Exploration of the First Two Centuries of Jesus Movements by Erin Vearncombe et. al.

History is not really my primary interest - DMB is likely a better source. I would "blame" Sovereign destiny...prophetic will, if you will. Pretty much everything ends up slotted in that pigeon hole eventually. You could call it "thematic intentionality" if you like. History either gets pretzeled or insultingly ignored by prophecy on the regular. The Bible is barely concerned with history. Humans are slaves to the idea of it...thrall drones.

Wow David. You nailed it. I bought this work and it guides me to a different perspective. Qumran texts allow us to learn how members of a competing group viewed the Pharisees. Paul claimed to have formerly been a Pharisee, but he was writing his letter as a Christian. What are the connections between the Pharisees and the rabbinical movements in and around the New Testament period?
