Just wondering if there's a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to shift back to the preview layout I was using.

Not sure I understand the question Mark so may well miss the mark with this answer.

I don't think that there are keyboard shortcuts to switch layouts. I think the reason I have never seen this come up before is that most folk spend sometime setting up their preferences in a few layout arrangements. When they open a layout they tend to want to work in that environment of a substantial period of time.

Having finished that section of work and tidied up the panels ready for their next session they may open another layout for another session.

I have never felt the need to change layouts in a rapid fire manner. You will find out how atypical I am from the barrage of folk who do below.

I don't think it is possible to assign keyboard shortcuts directly to certain layouts, BUT you could use the Favorites tool and in it the Quick Links section. You can drag and drop layouts to the Quick Links and have them available to you via Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2,etc ... see screenshot

As needed, I would assign those layouts I am currently using in my study, and change them if needed.
