Word Biblical Commentaries (WBC) mixed collections

Just a heads up for buyers – and perhaps for marketing – that there are currently two competing versions of the WBC New Testament volumes. Each is marketed as "25 volumes":

earlier collection (1982–2019) = product ID 150103, includes the first edition of 1&2 Thessalonians by F. F. Bruce
newer collection (1983–2023) = product ID 292840, replaces Bruce with the new edition of 1&2 Thessalonians by Seyoon Kim

It's great that the NT set has been updated (and Kim's second edition retains some of Bruce's elements). Perhaps most confusing for purchasers may be that it's the old NT collection that's sold as part of the overall WBC 61-volume set (product ID 207939). I wonder if buyers might simply see that the larger collection includes "WBC: New Testament, 25 vols" and assume that they're getting the newer set?

Kim’s second edition on Thessalonians looks very much like the old Bruce’s version. Literally, word for word as someone else pointed out in a review. So, I’ll probably save my money and buy something else.

The only WBC volume I am missing is the 2nd edition of 1 & 2 Thessalonians. I'm considering getting it, but still undecided.

Ted, someone read a section and it was almost the same, yet someone else said this revision has 400 pages more. So there’s definitely some new stuff, but is it updated bibliography, footnotes? Below, is a MBD of 2 Thes 2:3 ... the 2nd and 3rd columns are WBC-older and WBC-newer. I included AYB and ICC just for comparison of critical depth (that was a comment in the Reagan article above). I didn't try to compare the intro sections, but looks to me, Kim tracks Bruce but re-words, adding periodically. For the discounted price, I'm happy.

OK, it's a lot more complicated, as to where Kim expanded, and how (WBC format isn't easy). Below is chap 2's Form/Structure/Setting, where Kim goes deep relative to Bruce. So, again, I'm happy.

Reagan's review suggests the commentary itself is significantly updated, but not the introduction.

As the Reagan review notes, Kim's is effectively "a major new production." Possible confusion occurs if we sample only select parts of the book. Kim explains this in the middle of his Author's Preface (p.15):

"I have ended up rewriting most of the commentary (except the Translation and Notes sections; I have left the latter largely intact save for some slight updates in light of NA28). Looking back, I regret that I have not preserved more of Bruce’s original in the sections of Form/Structure/Setting, Comments, and Explanation."
