Insights Sidebar and Linksets

I've just noticed (running 34 beta 1 on Mac - although I assume the same applies in L33) that opening a commentary from the Insights Sidebar of a Bible puts the Bible and Commentary into a linkset.

If the Bible was already in a linkset, the commentary is added in
If the Bible was not in a linkset, a new linkset is created and both the Bible and commentary are added to it.

I think I understand why this was done but I'm not sure it's a good idea. In what I was doing at the time it was not ideal - I would have much preferred the Bible to stay at the same passage while scrolling up and down in the commentary but in other situations I see it could be helpful.

On balance, I think I would prefer to see this left as a choice to the user so they could add it to a linkset if required.

This is a case where I think what is best for a user comfortable with Logos and what I think is best for a new user of Logos are not the same. For the latter, which I see as the primary target of the Insights panel, I think the automatic linking is the best choice. For the rest of us, I agree that we'd prefer to set or not set the linkset ourselves.

Personally, I don't find a lot of value in the insights panel at the moment.

Like MJ, I don't see it as a tool being aimed at me as an experienced user. It is though I believe a beneficial tool for the new user of Logs and having it create an automatic link set as a feature of the tool is going to be beneficial to the new user.

Many bible studies and commentaries are tagged be pericope, not verse. If the commentaries follow great. If not then the main bible may lose its place. This may cause frustration to a new user.

I agree. I do not find much value of the panel. It is too broad yet ill-defined. I agree it is not for an experienced user.

Thanks for the feedback. It's helpful – but also on point that Insights probably isn't primarily aimed at you guys.

If anything, Graham's feedback suggests to me that we ought to have a "follow" option in the linkset (like we do on mobile), rather than that we shouldn't do it at all.

That would work (and be nice for other reasons) - presumably with the commentary / study guide being set to Follow
