How can I do a word study on a word Ἰουδαῖοι while excluding the biblical text? I have searched it via the Jewish War book by Josephus but cannot get any results. Can someone show me step by step how to do this kind of study?

What exactly are you looking for?

The Bible Word Study Guide is designed to look at how words are used in the biblical text, with links out to non-biblical texts to provide further context. You seem to be looking for the reverse.

    Please clarify.

Look it up in BDAG. That will show lots of extra-biblical uses of the word.

That is correct Graham. You are spot on with my type of study. I am trying to do the reverse as I already have my passages with the word in the biblical text. I want to study this word in all ancient texts in Greek, Hebrew and Latin from the era in and around the New Testament period within Second Temple Judaism. I want to cover non-biblical texts from 400 BC-250 AD. I do not own BDAG. Is there another resource helpful to this kind of study? I also want to study all cognates of the word above.

You might find Liddell's lexicon helpful

BDAG is an essential reference for those who do Greek study (as BHS is for Hebrew). I would save up your pennies and try to get it at some point. It's $165, but you might be able to get it for less through a dynamic price on a Legacy Library (e.g., Logos 10 Academic Professional) if you have enough of the other books already. Or if the Legacy Library costs a bit more, it might be worth it to you for all the extra stuff you'd get. As an academic, I think you would find much that would help your studies in an Academic Professional Library. I'd be willing to get you a $50 gift certificate towards that, and maybe a few others could chip in to make it more affordable for you (and perhaps give you more of the answers you crave that you've had to keep coming here to ask for).

That is my plan. I just bought HALOT in April (24th). I have 51.50$ left to get BDAG. But I know it costs more than that. I would be appreciative of any help from any of our forumities. Blessings to all.

I'll join Rosie in buying you a second $50 gift certificate ... I've done so anonymously for others.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

If you have HALOT already, you might find BDAG cheaper to acquire as part of the BDAG/HALOT Bundle with dynamic pricing. BDAG by itself is $164.99, but BDAG/HALOT price ($274.99) minus HALOT standalone price ($159.99) is only $115. I'm not sure if that's exactly how they calculate dynamic pricing, but it's sure to save you a bit anyway.

Also, I'd need your email address to be able to have a gift card applied to your account. Please obscure it somehow so that bots can't pick it up but I can still understand what it is.
