I recently purchased a new computer to help out running logos.

I got an HP with an i7 processor, 32gb Ram, 1 tb SSD drive, and Windows 11.

Will this be sufficent you think?

Yes, I am asking seriously, just don't know, now having second thoughts.

You have plenty of processing speed, RAM, and storage for Logos. A graphics card has ben recommended in the past. Windows internal graphics processor has improved a lot so a separate graphics card may not be needed anymore. Someone else would have to speak to that.

What you have is more than enough. You don't need a high end computer to run Logos like you would want for gaming. That said, Logos will sometimes run a bit slower on a mid-range computer, especially when you're doing a lot at the same time. But that's to be expected.

Typically you would know if you purchased a graphics card. It would be clearly listed in the specs of the computer you purchased. If it's not, then you are likely going to be using the integrated graphics of the i7 processor. I have used Logos with integrated graphics without a problem. I can't say how much of a performance upgrade a dedicated graphics card would give you in Logos, but my guess would be not all that much.

The computer specs will tell you about a separate/discrete graphics card (if any). The processor spec will tell you if a GPU (graphics processor) is integrated e.g. google i7-8700. The integrated one is usually sufficient these days.

Your order details, invoice, web site where you purchased the computer? The most common graphics card manufacturers are NVidia and AMD.

Many systems ship w/o a graphics card. Windows (Intel) on-board graphics is sufficient for most business and personal applications. Graphics cards are deemed essential by gamers and by people who use graphics, photo, and video editing software, among others. In Logos they added an essential performance boost in earlier versions of Windows (say before Windows 10). As I said, not sure if still needed. (EDIT: But follow what Dave says above.)

I bought a HP Z2 computer 2 years ago. Then I bought a graphics card for it and it can be quite expensive. I needed it for 3D graphics work, but Logos also works better. Installing the graphics card was quite a challenge, because it required some security related additional work.

OK, it is an integrated one. I'll have to see if the "HP ProDesk 600G3" can be upgraded with graphics card. Man, this is fascinating. If I understand correctly, there are "basically" 4 key components to any computer. Hard disk storage, RAM, processor, graphics card. I wonder if power supply plays a role...

I'm eager to see how your performance goes because it certainly seems like it should be very good owing to your SSD and 32 GB of RAM. Integrated graphics may enter the equation a tiny bit, but without a head-to-head comparison, you won't be able to tell the impact of that specific thing. Theoretically, it's going to be small. Integrated graphics uses system memory which may impact performance, but with 32 GB, it would be negligible.

Power supply plays a HUGE role when considering a graphics card. Many graphics cards cannot be installed into mid-range computers because the power supply is not sufficient to supply power to it. If you're in the market for graphics cards, talk to HP customer support to get a list of recommended graphics cards. If you're not careful, you'll purchase one that isn't compatible with your computer.

My suggestion would be to try out Logos for awhile without making any additional purchases. If you're pleased with the performance of your computer, save the money and spend it on your favorite library package. [:D]

IMHO any current gen i7 Intel or M series Apple device should work great with 8GB RAM and SSD HD. Anything above that is a bonus.

Can confirm the Apple M is good to go.

I used to use HP laptops almost exclusively. But I tried to change the Wireless card out in one, and they had a white list of which products they would allow.

It annoyed me, and I switched to Apple, which is ALOT more restrictive in terms of adding or replacing things... BUT, I've had less issues, and haven't wanted to change any thing.

I have an M1 (8gb), M2 (12gb IIRC) and M3 pro (18gb) now. I don't notice much speed difference between the chips. But I've been happy regardless. Quite snappy. Surprisingly sturdy too, I'm not a small man (well over 6 feet), and I dropped and then accidentally stepped on my MacBook Air, and it was just fine. Would have put my foot through the display of the HP. But didn't even scratch the Mac.

*shrug* get what you like though. your mileage may vary.

Bragging rights here. I bought an ASUS ROG G75VW-DH72 17.3" in 2012. It was loaded with

16GB RAM, two 750GB Hard Drives (I think). I upgraded to a 1 TB SSD + the 750GB HD, Intel Core i7-3630QM processor. It is a fully-loaded behemoth, weighing in at nearly 9 pounds.

I had it a few weeks and dropped it and my coffee off a second story railing at a Thailand mission retreat. It landed on edge, on cement, and sustained nothing more than road rash and a few bruises. It has served since in some 8-10 countries.

That now 14-year-old laptop still runs Logos just fine (maybe not super-snappy). It has been replaced by newer computers but is now enjoying semi-retirement. It still runs 24/7-ish to make a smart TV even smarter.

Welll.... One thing I think we're forgetting.... "What's the job you want your computer to do?" If you want the fanciest graphics ever seen, then buy the noisy, heater and resource taker known as a graphics card. In times past, I did this, but learned I really didn't use the benefits of that card all that much...so much so that it was wasted money on my part.

But if you want a computer... to run things like Logos, then what you will need is... 1. Ram... where your program resides while running, 2. Storage - where your files are kept. 3. Power to run all that stuff (a good power supply). 4. A good monitor to see what your doing.

And I agree with @Doug Yates, most computers that you buy today will run things like Logos great, with the graphics cards they have. So the questions come down to...

1. How much ram do you want? Most seem to want 16 gb. Some argue if 16 gb will work won't 32 gb work better? I say why not 256 gb? Won't that work better still? I'm using 12 gb... The computer was on sale at a price I couldn't refuse.... I compile programs, run Logos, Word, Excel, and others just fine.

2. How much storage do you want? 1TB seems to be what most are asking for... it may be a bit of overkill... most likely 500 gb or 750 gb would do the job... but for the difference in price would the 1 TB be worth it? Me, I did invest in 3 ea of 2 TB backup ssd drives. I feel backing up is something I need to do for me to sleep at night. And I like to sleep. [8-|]

I worked in engineering years back. There was a term I used regularly with the engineers... called... "Over engineering". I contend still that over engineering costs lost of money because your paying for "excess safety factor". I contend the same thing happens with computers so people can have bragging rights. But "over engineering" still costs plenty.

Bottom line... you have to decide what you want your computer to do and then buy the computer that fits that job.

My church computer is an M2 MacBook Air, the absolute base model. I was blown away by the improvement in performance on Logos compared to my personal laptop, a MacBook Pro with the last edition of Intel chips that they used. I don't understand much about Apple's new silicon chips, but using Logos is a fundamentally different experience with them.
