Russian Orthodox Church

Can anyone suggest a resource or three about the Russian Orthodox Church?
1. Her history (formation).
2. Her liturgy and sacraments.
3. Her iconography.
4. Her theologians.
5. and anything else that would be helpful.
The resources don't necessarily need to be FL/Logos produced.

These might be helpful:
- The Russian Orthodox Church: A Treatise of Her Origin and Life
- History and Theology of the Russian Orthodox Church (5 vols.)
I have these in my library, but I admit I've not gotten around to reading them yet.

Thanks, Rick! I have the first one and two vols., of the 5 vol set.
I wonder if any other resources are more 'current.' New scholarship and the like

This one is pretty specific, not broad, but I suggest it merely to get to know one of the Russian Orthodox Church's more recent theologian-priests, who was publicly martyred in 1990 in the former USSR.
I requested it on Feedbear and you could vote for it there but it's available on Kindle:
An Inner Step Toward God: Writings and Teachings on Prayer by Father Alexander Men

The 4 volume set Orthodox Christianity by Hilarian Alfeyev is an excellent one. I don't think it's available for individual purchase, but it is part of Logos 10 Orthodox libraries starter and up. I personally picked Orthodox Silver as my upgrade package for L10 as it contains Jaroslav Pelikan's The Christian Tradition, which is an incredible resource for historical theology.

Just picked it up. Thanks.

Just got An Inner Step on Kindle. However, I found a bio on him. No Kindle version is allowed in Canada though 👎👎. However, I did order the paperback. It will be here on Tuesday.
I'm quite looking foreward to the bio, being a first gen Russian myself. His early years, before 'conversion' mirrors mine 😜

For anyone interested in Father Alexander Men, here is a short (30-minute) YouTube video.

Thanks for being interested and passing on more info.
The person who edited An Inner Step Toward God, April French, is a friend of mine, fellow Regent College alumna. She did her master's thesis on Alexander Men and went on to do this book project and a PhD in modern Russian history and Christianity. She'll be delighted to know another person has been introduced to his work.

That's weird. I found it available for Kindle in Canada. Anyway, Canadians are allowed to buy Kindle books from the US Amazon store as well, so I usually have my default store set to Amazon.com for all my Kindle books, since the range of what is available there is greater. You have to switch your geo setting in the store somewhere (don't have to have a US address for it), and then you can change it back again at will. I switch back to Canadian whenever there's a Kindle book that is only available in Canada, which is exceedingly rare.
If you really can't access the Canadian Kindle version, here's the US Kindle version.

I didn't realize I could do the US switch thing. I'll have to remember that fore next time.

Nice. Is her thesis available to the public?

Yes, a print edition is available if you have access to one of the 32 libraries that have it or your library can do inter-library loan for it:
https://search.worldcat.org/title/825007939
In Canada, the only library that has it is Regent College.
I can ask April if she would be willing to make a digital version of it available. She's on academia.edu, but I didn't see it there. And Google Scholar only has a citation of it. It's titled "Spiritual Dissident: The Writings of Father Aleksandr Men' as Dissent from Soviet Ideology".

In the US there is a service from which you can request any theses from many universities. There may be a similar Canadian service.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Well, we could make a nice trip to Recent and visit our oldest son who lives in Vancouver. Be a nice trip. HOWEVER, I'd miss too many rounds of golf though ⛳
If your friend is willing to make a digital copy, I'd be more than happy to read it. However, if she feels uncomfortable about that, no worries.

She's willing, and she will email it to me later today. Could you send me your email address (via Faithlife social media platform; click on my name).
