Translation

I am studying a passage based on my Pastor's translation. Exodus 23:13 NKJV 13 “And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard from your mouth. From what I have read "make no mention" is not a recognized translation. I did a translation comparison but Hebrew is not my good language. Many translators render this phrase as "do not say", or "do not invoke" or "thou shalt not call upon." I want to see why it is not universal in translation. I am really trying to get more or less a methodology as to why and how this came to be. I have read exegesis of these books.

I don't know what you are basing that on but I get 34 Bibles in Logos showing that translation in that verse

I have read these books.

And I'm not sure what further you are looking for from forum members after consulting 9 relevant reference books - do you have a Logos-related question?

That is what the pastor said in his sermon.

So this looks like an example of using Logos - in this case a standard Bible search - to examine what someone says.

It's important not to assume that the NT does quote this passage.

To look at references, I would suggest using either the New Testament Use of the Old Testament or the Cross References or Important Passages sections in a Passage Guide on that verse.

What do you mean by "recognized translation"? I suggest that you ban the term from your mind. A particular translation may not be attested in the body of English translations that you have access to, or a previously defined list of common translations or approved for liturgical use in major denominations or ...

But you said you read it, not that your pastor said it. Is your short-term memory playing tricks on you?

Looking at your commentary list, they don't discuss the issue ... what the original reading was. Basically comparing the MT, Quman (4Qpaleo), the Targums, Samaritan, and LXX.

Additionally, where a reading is not clear, another reading having similar words can provide additional threads to follow (eg Jos 23.7).

In addition, Christian, you need to review the apparatuses for variants within a manuscript family.
