DEAR Logos about your long-term, retired users ...

I promise not to sign up myself but I was talking to a friend ...

Some retirees, especially retired pastors of small churches in small denominations, have very meager income to pay for subscriptions and it would leave them nothing for books. My first choice would be to have a very low subscription rate preferably including the sermon editor, for retired users over the age of 70 who have used Logos for more than 7 years [any numbers that you want would work]. One organization to which I belong handles it with a pay what you can subscription. My second choice would be to create a fund which Logos users could donate to which would subsidize the subscription for this group of people.

I'm in your target demographic. I'm 78 and preach part-time in a small church.

I've used Logos almost since it began. I've dropped some other software simply because the companies want far more than I can justify. In some cases, the consequence is that the files I created with their software are no longer usable. I hope that never happens with Logos. It would certainly be a breach of trust since I have abandoned a large number of print books and built a 3000+ Logos library.

Great points here and hopefully opens eyes at Logos - there are some other groups as well that may not fit the age/retiree category but are still on minimal/fixed income levels or not able and even safe to use all the online access and just need to own and be offline - think missionary level servants in "unfriendly" "unsafe" locations....

They may have supporters that could make a one time donation/purchase and download everything when they are in a safe place, then go offline and enjoy... I am aware of this particular type of situation in some strict locations.

Pastors in Africa/Asia/South America is another group who'd definitely struggle with subscription cost. Although discounting subscription prices for this group might open the door to abuse. (For example, I've bought an annual Spotify Premium subscription for my daughter in India for $20 using a VPN.)

I like the idea of giving discounts to elderly men and women who have been serving the church and using the product. It supports their contribution of wisdom to the church. That's a class of people that deserve thanks. (And I don't say that just for my benefit.) In my case, I know my years are coming to a close and I live on a limited income so I'm not going to be buying large amounts of resources, so I wouldn't be draining Logos' coffers.

I like the idea that those who are able, contribute to a fund used to provide discounts to various groups of people. This could be implemented like many stores do. At check-out of a purchase, we would be offered the opportunity to contribute. Perhaps Logos could also solicit matching funds. This could be done through a program that allows us to approach our churches for a contribution.

I think this program could be implemented in software so after the initial investment, wouldn't take a lot to manage. (Perhaps an AI could do it?[:D])

one thing to remember, is that Logos has said they will still offer the free version of its software. It does not have all the features of course, but it will still have updates for operating systems and so forth.

I know this doesn't answer completely the original question but at least Logos is committed to making sure everyone will always be able to access their book purchases.

But I agree with the idea of a fund to help those who need it, that have served the church.

True, but senior discounts are a common practice in business so that is the issue I chose to address. Logos can certainly extend discounts to other groups.

Maybe discounts should be based on age. So a 50 year old gets a 50% discount. 70 year old gets 70% discount. And of course, a 100 year old gets it free [8-|]

While there are some that have meagre incomes there are many of the same age who either are not retired or have generous incomes.

While I don't dispute the kindness of making some provision for this group I would make two conditions to remove temptation and establish need.

1. Submission of their tax return to establish their meagre income.

2. Self-certification that they have read (at least once) all the books in their current library.

That's over the top. Smiling. Everytime you get a good deal at Logos, they dump in books you'll never read. My latest batch, I'm too lazy to even tag them (don't fit my existing tags). In the old days, you could happily give them away. Now, you're stuck with them.

But this conversation is good. But odd. The mysterious 'we' used to point out the Cadallac Bible software (expensive, and Logos staff did use the term). Then, they intro'd inexpensive packages. But saving serious money was/is still reserved for the well off. My Dad would not pay a subscription ... he had what he wanted.

And I still recommend OliveTree as a good choice for ease of use, good selection, and kind to ones pocketbook. Quick on Sunday morning, too.

I agree ... and I keep forgetting that Logos users some of whom loudly complain Logos is not a Christian ministry are also the Logos users some of whom do not display Christian behavior in claiming benefits.
