Layout: terminology question (template, layout, project)

I'm thinking of starting Tip of the Day up again with an emphasis on terminology and data. Which brought up an issue in which I know at least one person in the forums and myself have different opinions on how the word "layout" is properly used. To me:

layout is a set pattern of panes containing resources and tools
template is a set pattern of empty panes

If you were to see layout and template used in contrast to each other, is this what you would expect? Would this be natural to you or feel forced?

Where would you place "project" in the mix, if you use that term (I generally don't)?

Trying to analyze my own knee-jerkn usage:

Logos has layouts (saved settings for how specific resources are laid out). Workflows are templates (a consistent process with variable contents) that generate projects (self-contained multipart outputs). The sermon editor also lets users create templates and sermons are at least potentially projects (they contain a notebook, a manuscript, slides, and discussion questions).

I agree with your opinion of layout and template. As far as “project” is concerned, I consider each of my layouts a project. I have a layout entitled “Sermon Prep” that is used to create sermons, a layout for men’s small groups, A layout for youth group, and so on. While each project may use similar resources, each one also has resources that are unique to that particular project. I save my primary project layouts to the Home page dashboard for easy recall.

For instance, I may be working on a communion meditation in my “Communion Meditation” project layout. If I then decide to work on youth group curriculum, I save my “Communion Meditation” layout, go to the home page dashboard and then click on my “Youth Group” layout.

If I need to create a new project layout, I can create one from scratch or use one of the “template” layouts.

I would state that a layout is a saved pattern of tiles containing books and tools, where "tiles" is used for the presets at the top of the Layouts menu. A pane appears within a panel (that has a menu and toolbar, and is identified by a tab) e.g. the Interlinear pane.

A template can comprise empty tiles, but it can be a layout that only needs "local" adaptation to be relevant e.g. a Quickstart layout.

A "project" implies a template with preset panels for books and tools which can become a saved layout/project i.e. it mandates the use of panels (e.g. for books or tools), and would have rules for placement of books/tools when opening.

I keep forgetting that the library now contains books (with an abused definition) rather than resources [:$] but no, in this context, I don't think of tools as resources. I think I agree with your version of tile vs. pane despite it requiring a bit of adjustment.

Guides also seem to be their own category, of which templates fit in. Or are there other places that templates fit? (i.e. Sermon Editor)

Tool is the one that I sometimes wonder about in the Logos ecosystem. Are items 'Cited By' , 'Text Comparison' and 'Information' tools?

Workspace was used before Logos 4 e.g. in Libronix/Logos 3.

Yes, as are Guides and Documents for the purpose of this discussion.

A layout template is being discussed here, where tiles define its pattern/shape.

I do not use this term very often. Rarely would be the right word.
