Moving to Platinum a PLUS! - Question: what about the Portfolio Edition?

In another posting many expressed the appreciation and recognized the value in moving to "Platinum" edition. I upgraded when the Logos 4 upgrade option was offered and I feel it was well worth it. The discount is back on now until Mac 4 is shipped - therefore 'My Question'": what value have any of you found in moving to the Portfolio Edition 4?

I printed off the listing Logos provides that brings a clarity of present own resources with what one would get in the next upgrade. To see this listing click on the upgrade button and it will show you what the proposed cost to upgrade would be. While at that window scroll down for a display showing the Portfolio books highlighted in a different color.

I found value in upgrading to Portfolio (from Gold). There were many titles & sets that I wanted to buy because of my studies. As I was adding up the price of those titles alone, if I had bought them individually, it was coming totally about half of what I was going to spend getting Portfolio and all of the extra books that came with it. It was at that point that I figured it was worthwhile upgrading to Portfolio to have all of the extra resources.

Admittedly, there are many resources that I may not use for years, but it's nice to know that I have them available to me already without having to purchase them as I need them. Plus, it frees me up to eye other additions in the future that I need/want.

Like LaRosa, I found value in moving from Platinum to Portfolio. It was a harder switch, because the cash outlay was more, and many of the resources were more "exotic" (ie, ones I might not use as frequently, or ones that weren't as foundational to my daily study). But in the end I employed (for the first time) the payment plan to get it. Some esteemed Logos users and some MVPs have not felt compelled to move from Platinum. I would suggest you do what LaRosa and I have done, and make a list of those resources in Portfolio that you really think you will use and consider the cost of those as a standalone purchase vs. buying the Portfolio package.

You also might consider what is being offered via pre-pub now that might be a very good deal for your library use and dollars spent, and then weigh those dollar amounts along with what is needed for Portfolio compared to the cash outlay you have.

If you are wanting several Portfolio products right now, you will be hard pressed to find as good a value as a package upgrade.

I made myself an Excel spreadsheet to figure out if it was worth the upgrade to Portfolio. It was a laborious task, but when talking about that kind of money I felt I had to do my homework first. I went through the entire list of Portfolio resources on http://www.logos.com/comparison and made a list of which ones I didn't have already (the upgrade tool on the website wasn't working very well at the time and only showed me which items I didn't have as part of my previous base package but it missed those things I'd bought individually). Then I reviewed this list and highlighted the items on it which would have been on my wishlist; in some cases I had to go look them up on the Logos website to read the product description page. Finally I tallied the cost of all the books I would want to buy and found that the total was more than the cost of the upgrade. So I went for it.

I jumped all over Portfolio like a backyard trampoline! If Logos comes out with a Portfolio 2 too, I will be on that like beans on rice! Not being a pastor, I don't have much use for the arkload of "ministry" titles it has (filler, as far as I'm concerned) , but it has plenty of items I really wanted...commentaries, lexicons, references.

I wish Logos would come out with a "Build Your Own Portfolio" offering...I would drop big bucks if I could get base package discounts on a package of items that I really want to have--stuff that isn't in any base package at this time.

...oh, and the Italian calf leather portfolio was a nice plus, too! [H]

Larry, for me, I am really into Old Testament contextual history and source history as well as other original sources from that same context. I considered it well worth the financial outlay for that reason alone. However, dollar-wise, it is a big jump and investment. I would recommend it.

The down side; getting to all of those resources. Which one first. What a joyful problem to have!

Hi Larry,

As one who DID upgrade to platinum & DIDN'T upgrade to Portfolio, I thought I'd weigh in, too, with a couple of observations as a long time Logos user (since mid '90s, version 1.6).

The best value is always package upgrades, like portfolio... The ONLY reason I didn't go for portfolio was cost. If the cost is not prohibitive to you, I'd suggest that your ministry WILL be enriched beyond anything you can envision if only you HAVE the resources to discover & grow into. By carefully choosing packages, most growth of my library has been under $3/book--more usually between $1-2/book, with a good percentage of resources I'd really use (all packages contain some we won't use, but usually isn't the same list I thought I wouldn't, as well as being a smaller list than I thought I wouldn't use).

My sincere hope is that one of the following will come to pass:

my church will grow to the point that the current cost to upgrade from Platinum is no longer prohibitive
when Logos provides an upgrade to the Portfolio edition (say, the suitcase edition?), that the upgrade to Portfolio from Platinum will be less; or
Logos will provide interim levels between Platinum & Portfolio that will allow me to grow by a more affordable amount each year.

I love your description I started a spreadsheet of all the resources included in Portfolio. As I worked my way through it, checking the ones I hoped to eventually purchase, I passed the break even point about one-third through the list. A cursory glance showed thousands of dollars more I welcomed. I quit my calculating and placed my order. I have never regretted going for it.

I, too, like the reference works, commentaries and language materials. I view my Logos library as a lifelong tool box. I hope to preach again and I like having the pastoral resources "just in case." What I consider filler today may be my most used resources next year.

I still think this is a brilliant idea and hope Logos takes note.

I have upgraded from the Bible Study Library to Scholar Gold and finally Platinum. I have been very happy with each upgrade.

I have not given too much attention to the Portfolio pkg, because it is a huge jump financially. It appears that there is not that much that I am really interesting in adding to my library.

If Logos adds an intermediate pkg in another year or two (titatnium? diamond?), it might be of interest to me add others.

I never got the leather portfolio either, because I upgraded online (or perhaps it's simply because I upgraded rather than being a first-time buyer?). Anyway, frankly, it would just end up gathering dust probably. I have too many such things around my house and very little use for them now that I do just about everything (besides cooking and sleeping) on the computer.

Larry, for me the upgrade was not worthwhile. Not enough items I'd get were compelling. I probably wouldn't seek to own most of them, so they weren't a bargain to me. I have subsequently tied up whatever I would have spent for Portfolio in pre-pubs and other resource purchases. I have not looked back. (BTW: the discounts were better last year, unfortunately, and even at that price I do not regret my decision a bit). For me it isn't just how many resources but whether they are resources I'd use and want. If there are enough and the deal for those is good enough, go for it.

Um...notice I didn't say I don't eat at the computer, I just don't cook (though I do keep my recipe book on the computer; EDIT: and I did bring my laptop with my to my parents' house once and cooked chicken mushroom risotto while reading off the screen because I couldn't get their printer to work). It so happens I spilt some soy sauce from my take-out sushi under the spacebar yesterday. Fortunately I think I was able to soak it all up with a paper napkin before any damage was done.

Why do we have to take Excel or Numbers and by hand make a list of what we have to compare it to the Logos base packages (any of them)? I don't understand why we can't have an exportable list builder in Logos as a feature.

This is no longer the case as of 4.1. The new Export feature does what you want. You can make a collection of your entire library (using just an asterisk * for the rule, to match everything). Then choose Print/Export... from the collection's panel menu. You can export it in any of a number of formats, using just plain text or a textual bibilographic format like Turabian, MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, SBL Handbook of Style. Or you can export in BibTex which can be read in by a number of bibliography software packages.

I just spent some time taking Logos.com/upgrade page and comparing it with what I have. The first thing I noticed is the thing just isn't accurate at all. It has many of the things I do own in the "don't own" category. I mean bunches. It was this way when I went from Silver to Gold, too, but my sales guy swore to me I was not getting hurt; and he has had many chances to make much more money off of me at times and did not, so I trust the guy.

I have a spreadsheet I have entitled, "Wish list" and it has everything I know of that I want.

I hope you can read it. The "list" price is the Logos sale price on the website.

The total list price for that stuff is $6,965 and I can get it substantially lower. It is nearly 100k pages, 98,437, and finally, it is 211 volumes which would be added to my collection. EDIT: I forgot something: Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library (29 Vols.) which will add 18,242 pages, making it over 100,000 total. The price goes up $500. Not that much considering.

On the other hand, here's the things out of the Portfolio that I would even care about:

There's a few of these that are the same from one spreadsheet to the other. There is a $1,169.00 difference in the "list price." There is almost a 90% difference in the amount of pages, the first image being the winner with 98,437. There are a few nuggets in the Portfolio I would be highly interested in, but quite frankly, if I am going to pull down this kind of money, I would probably go ahead and pick those up, as well.

It boils down to this: The list price on the upgrade to Portfolio for me is $2,473. I would rather pull out another $1,500 -+ and get the core stuff in the first spreadsheet. If I am pulling out $2,500, I am "going for it!" I just don't see a big advantage with the Portfolio.

Now, keep in mind, I am much like Rosie, in that I am more interested in Academic material, as I am headed to Seminary shortly and I intend on working in biblical academia the rest of my life. If I were going into the pastoral ministry that first list would look highly different and the Portfolio would be the deal!

Yes, it's been problematic for some time, and they know that. This is slated to be fixed with the new website which they've been testing internally.

It looks like you've done the same kind of cost comparison analysis (with an Excel spreadsheet) that I did when I considered my upgrade to Portfolio. That's the way to do it. If you can get just the titles you want for less, then by all means go for it. If you can upgrade to Portfolio for $2473 and thereby get $5796 worth of stuff you might be interested in, that seems like a good deal. But if you're more interested in the list from your first spreadsheet and don't have enough money to both buy that and upgrade to Portfolio, then clearly your decision is made for you.

Oh, sorry. Yes, it's in Logos 4.1 for Windows. Mac has yet to catch up to a few of the new features in the Windows side. But it should be in the next major release of Logos for Mac (4.1).

David I have asking for some time, for Logos to offer packages based on area of interest.

Those who are history buffs, could get a history package, others include, N.T., O.T., theology, Grammar (beyond what is in Potfolio), Ministry.etc.. Perhaps a trade off, where I sacrifice the Targum series for say a few good commentaries or books on N. T. background and culture. And if they want to see me dance a jig, then allow me trade in any resource that I purchased from them, for another one that I desire, at the same price.
