However, the apparently same book has been added to the pre-pub program today for just $7.99, but this time as a Research Edition.

I like the sound of paying less and getting a research edition. I raise the matter because the dearer version was listed as "in production" but the cheaper version simply as "gathering interest " and therefore in need of support. Maybe if you ordered the dearer version, you could also order the cheaper research edition and see if we can push that one into production.
Perhaps others will find a content difference in the 2 editions, but I can't find any.
