Labels Vs Passage Lists Question

I've not used Highlighting and Labels. I have used Notes and Passage Lists. But is there an advantage of Passage Lists over Labels or Labels over Passage Lists? And this question comes probably because of my lack of understanding of either or both.

Labels and passage lists have different purposes in my workflow. Labels are visual indicators in bible and non-bible text that indicate the presence of something I want to see in the text. For example, I have a custom label for "Worship", where I identify worship as individual, corporate, or heavenly. As such, my Labels are displayed in the text itself. Labels are also searchable.

Passage lists are simply that - lists of bible passages that are the result of searches. In my experience a passage list normally wouldn't show up in bible text, however if you wanted to you could anchor a note to a verse and include a link to a passage list within the note. Passage lists are accessed through the Documents icon.

I think using labels is superior to using passage lists in almost every way. First, to clarify: Notes and highlights are actually the same thing. When you create a highlight, it creates a (blank) note, and when you create a note, you can control how it identifies the anchor. Labels are optional attributes of notes that let you search them and categorize data. Since they are notes, you can categorize them in notebooks and decide which ones to show in your Bible at any particular time. The notes tool should probably be renamed "markup," since it includes notes, labels, and highlighting (it's a good thing I am not in charge of marketing).

Why are they better?
1.) You can easily convert them to a passage list, since you can save any set of search results as a passage list. You can't convert a passage list to a set of notes without doing each one manually (although you can highlight a passage list with a visual filter).
2.) Notes let you have notes! Passage lists are just bare lists, without any chance to explain why you included a reference that may be unclear in 5 years. If you use a label, you can mark it as an example of label.worship.type:corporate and write in the note "I think this counts as worship because it is an example of doing good and sharing, cf. Hebrews 13:16."
3.) Labels are more powerful for comparing and contrasting. If I have a passage list of instances of evangelism and another with instances of apologetics, I can create a union of those lists to make a list of the overlap. But if I later add something else to my lists, then I have to create a new union list. If I use labels, I am just going to search each time for label.GreatCommission.phase:evangelism AND label.Application.type:apologetics, or whatever, and so it will be a perfect list every time.
4.) Labels easily show up in the biblical text. Just put it in a notebook and hide or display it whenever you want. You can make passage lists show up with visual filters, but that is much more strenuous on your computer.

Passage lists do come up in my workflow, but ideally only for things that are predefined and specific. So if I am teaching a class and want to have all of my Scripture references cues up and ready to go, I will use a passage list. If I am making a list of memory verses, that tool requires a passage list. For me, passage lists are like pieces of scratch paper, when I am using a specific list for a specific task, and don't necessarily want to mess with making a custom highlighting style.

I hope that notes continue to get better. If note filtering ever gets modernized, you could filter your notes by label.whatever.thing:attribute and basically create a passage list with notes attached. Unfortunately, that isn't possible now, although in my opinion updating old features like notes is exactly the kind of thing the new subscription model should make possible. If I were in Mark Barnes's position (lucky for you that I am not), I would redefine notes tags as labels (label.Note.tag:whatever) so that you could search by tags, and filter by labels.

Just some clarification. I would say that both create a "blank" Note with an Anchor i.e. you can add your own notes to both. A subtle difference is that a Note by reference does not show the text of the passage with the Anchor.

A Label is usually associated with a Highlight because you can define the structure in that tool, but you can define/add a label with any Note in the Notes tool - but the structure is not documented.
