QUESTION for Logos and an AI first for me - on copyright page of a dead-tree format book

"NO AI TRAINING: Without in any way limiting the author's [and publisher's] exclusive rights under copyright, any use of this publication to "train" generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to generate text is expressly prohibited. The author reserves all rights to license uses of this work for generative AI training and development of machine learning language models"

Assuming that Logos feeds text to its AI provider, what provisions have they made to protect books with such restrictions? Asking for a friend - literally as the book from which the notice is taken was written by a friend.

This will be interesting.... I wonder if part of the cost of the AI features is a royalty of some form to the Authors/Publishers

Its a new frontier. Eventually there will be a big fight against big tech stealing IP.

The lawsuits already began: AI learned from their work. Now they want compensation.

As to whether Logos has permission from all of its copyright holding publishers, only Logos knows. I would assume they have already considered these issues with 10,000 lawyers [;)]

I don't know much, but wouldn't things like a summary be considered "fair use"? Especially when the only recipient has licensed the entire book?

Feeding text into an existing engine to get a summary is not the same thing as training a model. If Logos is using third party models rather than training them, this would not matter, even if this kind of disclaimer does hold up in court (and it is not yet clear that it will).

Yes, I recognize this and no, that is not quite the full picture. The neural network is always adjusting itself with the feedback from its responses although not in the traditional sense of continuous training. There are several gray areas that have to be addressed by the court and the implementation of appropriate laws.

Interesting question. I know there is no solution in the AI image world yet and it's caused many bitter arguments. Real artists who see their works used do feel they are being stolen from.

Applying that to books, I imagine the issue is whether AI is used to generate content (for example, "create a paper on X using theologian Y" or "Create a story using the style of Tolkien") or if AI is used to summarize works so the user can decide whether or not the work is useful. In the first case, I think your author friend has a valid concern. In the second, I think this an ethical use.

Personally, I tend to use AI for text as a sort of glorified "super search engine," pointing me to information and resources I can use. (It's what I hope to gain from AI when Verbum subscription goes live).

It might not be relevant to what you want to know, but it is what came to mind reading your question.
