Identify the Tools and Features in Logos 37 that use AI

What is the easiest way to know if a tool or feature in the new version of Logos uses AI?

Is there a list comprising just those tools and features that use AI? Is there a standard icon or symbol that will be displayed within Logos for every tool and feature that uses AI? Is there different way than those mentioned?

It's also my impression that sometimes, AI may or may not be used by a tool or feature, depending on usage options selected within that tool or feature. If so, my question also applies to which of those usage options within a tool or feature would trigger the use of AI.

In Logos Help [Sub] [Requires AI Credits] signifies an AI feature AND that a Subscription is required i.e. AI requires a subscription.
Note that Auto Translation is [L10] [Net] [Requires AI Credits], signifying that it is not AI but its online [Net] requirement uses AI Credits AND it does not require a subscription if you have the L10 Full Feature set (otherwise [L10] = an appropriate L10 feature set).

Based on the presence (or lack of) the little glittery star, I'll use the tabs of the "Search" feature/function to make sure I understand correctly.

All: AI is always used.

Bible: AI is never used.

Books: AI is optional. Always used for a "Smart" search--even if not showing "Synopsis". Never used for a "Precise" search.

Factbook; Morph; Media; Docs; Maps; Factbook Tags; Bookstore; Clause; Syntax: AI is never used.

Am I understanding correctly?

I apologize, but I hadn't been tracking with this. Does this mean that if I do choose to subscribe, perhaps even at the top tier, I can run out of "AI Credits" and the features will just stop working for me until I get more credits? Am I understanding that correctly?

That's...not an attractive proposition. I'm trying to warm up to the new approach, but FaithLife is surely not making it easy.

I have a clarifying question about the use of AI when doing a "Books" search.

My question is: Does turning off (not using) the "Synopsis" feature when doing a "Books" search, eliminate the use of AI credits, reduce the use of AI credits, or have no bearing on the use of AI credits for the search? I ask, because of the following excerpt about "Smart Synopsis" that I copied from the Logos "Help" manual.

Smart Synopsis

Smart Search results also feature the Smart Synopsis, which collects answers from the top results and combines them into a single response with supporting citations to Logos books.

Users can hide the synopsis by clicking the X. Synopsis will not show again (and therefore won’t use AI credits) until the user clicks Show Synopsis to toggle it back on.

That's my understanding, with the caveat that Faithlife says they provide enough credits, that the typical user (whatever that means), is very unlikely to run out of credits. I think I read somewhere that higher subscription tiers get more credits but I haven't searched to verify that.

I believe the request has been made for Faithlife to provide a way for subscribers to track their credits usage/status, but I don't know if there's anything in the works regarding that request.

The feature is available on the web app (bottom left); I assume it'll be available on Desktop in due course.

It seems that unless you're doing a lot of book translations you're unlikely to hit the limit.

Thanks, Rick. Once I knew it was there, I was able to find some information in the FAQs here (Logos Subscription FAQ). It's under these two questions:

Is there a usage limit on AI tools? "To ensure a fair level of access for every user, each subscriber gets a fair usage limit on AI tools each month. The limits are generous—typically, we allow thousands of uses of AI features each month before you hit the limit. The app will let you know when you’re getting close."
Can I buy more AI credits À la carte if I run out? "No, but Pro gives you double the credits of Premium, and Max gives you 50% more credits than Pro. In the unlikely event that you use all your AI credits, you can upgrade your plan to increase your credit allotment or wait for your credits to renew at the start of your next month."

This is a pretty important limitation, and I'm frustrated that it's not easier to find. I'm flabbergasted that the level of credits isn't shown in the side-by-side of the different subscription levels (https://www.logos.com/configure/subscriptions) - or if it is, I couldn't find it. And I'm still not sure what it means. I use Logos a lot, but is it enough that I would bump up against the limit? I don't know, and I don't know how to find out. I wasn't asking for AI. Are the AI-assisted searches enough better to risk becoming dependent on a feature that may stop working for me mid-month? Again, I don't know - but my gut says "no."

I love Logos, and I really want to stick with it - but this feels like a mess to me.

What really disturbs me is that I may well end up forced to subscribe - and end up frustrated and resentful towards a software platform and company that I've always felt good about. I don't want that. I'd rather walk away and find a different vendor that I could feel good about.

Thanks, John. I appreciate your input, and it is a data point. I don't know how much it helps, though, because this very much seems like a "your mileage may vary" situation. It's impossible to know how your study and research patterns compare to mine.

I am not subscribing, but I in no way feel forced to do so. I am satisfied with the Logos features I now have. I see no reason why I cannot continue with the Logos I now have. I think I will just stick with my own intelligence, or lack thereof, and not worry about AI.

It's impossible to know how your study and research patterns compare to mine.

On the web Logos, the AI-O-Meter is in the lower left corner (I don't have the subscription, but do have 'paid' translation, etc). So far, the meter is reading zero. And as I understand it, the AI-tank gets emptied each month ... not cumulative.

Personally, I'm happy to sit back and watch (not subscribe). The new tools would wreck my layout, along with being inefficient. It's not hard to have designed a better solution ... lots of examples out there.

But I do believe (not being catty) that something's gone wrong at Mother FL. More so, in the Logos.com world. Today, a poster recommended an author that an earlier poster 'slummed' (whatever that means). So I entered the search term and got everything but that author. Big collections. I even did the author: tag. Presumably I could have forced the issue.

I was impressed the drop-down suggestions were all wrong ... they used to martch the search term, with the results wrong. Now both wrong. I did find a great book though, totally unrelated. I was examining it because it didn't claim any savings (a new phenomina). So I went to Amazon ... and got a $20 dollar savings (about 40%; Logos had the digital list as the sell price).

My impression ... their analytics are going very short-term. Same on the daily emails, knowing (1) it's a customer irritant, and (2) they're obviously not 'personal. Marginal results fuel the decision making.

Mike and DMB, thank you both for sharing your perspectives in a gracious fashion. I should have been more moderate in my last comment. That was my frustration talking. Logos has become an integral part of my Bible study and lesson prep process, and I'd like to stick with it and support the company. I'm just struggling with whether it makes sense for me given this new direction they're taking.

EastTN, I can see this is emotional for you, and understand. To be honest the only real alternative software sold their "update" in 2022 and still has not completed the major updates it sold. I think you can try the subscription and see if you like it and if not unsubscribe and then decide the direction you want to go. I love studying the bible and will not let changes to the tools I use impact that. I will simply adjust. I have found Logos 37 with a subscription to be enjoyable. I think they are going to improve the dynamic toolbar and it will be even more enjoyable.

That makes the most sense, but in an MP video I watched where Josh was covering the Smart Search, he made the comment that AI credits wouldn't be used if you turn off the synopsis, and it wasn't clear (to me) if it turned AI credit usage off for search as a whole or just the synopsis.

I was concerned early on about running out of credits--especially after reading a few comments from an early access user sharing it happened to them, and I had no desire to get used to a feature that might not be available due to lack of credits. I'm now of the impression heavy use of the translation feature might pose the biggest risk for running out of credits and that's not a task I'll typically be involved with, so I hope it won't be an issue. I guess time will tell.

John, I'm glad it's working for you. I'm not emotional like I've lost a friend, I'm frustrated and annoyed with FaithLife the way I get frustrated and annoyed with my cell phone company. I understand that I can try the subscription. If I do, I have no doubt that the software will work o.k. I'm just not seeing anything in the new features that has any real appeal to me. I already have a large enough library that the library offerings aren't all that compelling either. The question for me - and I just have to decide - is whether I'm willing to take on an ongoing subscription to preserve some future options. And yes, I have been looking at what the main competitor offers, and I'm seriously considering buying a base package and getting familiar with it just to hedge my bets.

The sad thing is that if FaithLife hadn't decided to drive all their users into subscriptions, I would never have considered that. I have too much sunk cost (in both time and money) in the Logos ecosystem for it have made sense otherwise.

I don't understand your concern. Based upon what you have written here, it sounds simple to me... don't subscribe. Keep using what you have. Continue to be a part of the community. Use the software. If your needs change in the future, make the best decision you can at that later time.

JT, you're doubtless right. The thing is, I want to support the company and had about talked myself into springing for a subscription for that reason. I even had the discussion with the spouse on Saturday afternoon. Then I stumbled on this deal with the AI credits. I also have some concern that if this update goes in a direction that doesn't make sense for me, will Logos still be a good fit 5 years from now after another major update or two?

Anyway, thanks for the good advice. I do just have to make a decision and go with it.

I think JT has provided you the best path for you at this time. I have had the other bible software package for a long time. Currently your risk of loss of investment with them is significantly higher than with Logos. If this was 4 years ago, my opinion would be different, but things there are not good. Just my opinion.
