Say No to Subscriptions

Why Logos? You were such a great tool. But going to subscription based features will make Logos unusable for me. I cannot afford to have a constant subscription to Logos. I'm sure many others feel the same way. In FAQ you say we can still buy books and features the "legacy"/normal way. However, in actuality, we have to buy a subscription to get any features. I will not be recommending Logos to anyone any longer. I was fully onboard with Logos until you switched to subscriptions.

Technically? For another few days https://www.logos.com/product/228483/verbum-10-full-feature-upgrade I don't actually know, but I think Daniel's right ... to 'get' features (absent the closing Verbum window), subscription is it.

I'm also not too thrilled with the non-subscription surcharge on books (apparently per 1Cor's comparisons).

I get the frustration, but this is just not accurate.

Logos has ALWAYS charged for upgrades. The pattern: Every two years, they'd release a new feature set, available for purchase. If you didn't want the new feature set and/or, you could stick with the existing features you purchased.

None of the features you paid for are going away. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've spent a LOT of time reviewing both my account and the extensive documentation on the forums and on Logos. If you don't pay for new features, you won't get them - and it's ALWAYS been that way.

The difference is that you can't buy a new set of features going forward and have them permanently. There are legitimate complaints about THAT, but you will STILL keep your old features, even if you don't subscribe.

Am I missing something? I'd really appreciate being corrected here, because I have continued to recommend Logos, based on the understanding that customers will have access to their purchased feature set, as well as the core engine.

Dru, I can't speak for Daniel ... but imagine you're a newly minted pastor next year, and would really benefit from the Sermon tools ... maybe the study tools. Not to mention some of the OL tools.

Previously you could 'pay once'. Now, you pay till you retire (or give up, but then lose it all). The exception (as I understand it), is the L10'ers, who nail down some 'L11' features in a couple of years. But to emphasize ... new to you is the problem.

It's the 'THAT' (in your comments) that is the new 'era' new Logosians face.

Sure, I get that. I was thinking of the specific claim that there are no features available outside of a subscription. As I said, I appreciate the frustration.

This isn't everyone - but when I started with Logos, I would have loved a chance to pay $10-20/month to access the feature set and library offered. I was a return missionary with four kids making about 20k a year. I knew Logos would help me, but the $1000 or more seemed out of reach. I was able to buy a package through eBay, and slowly built up from there. But even the discounted secondhand Logos I purchased was a financial stretch, compared to what is offered per month now.

Still, I can say this sitting comfortably with my Logos 10 Feature set. Others freaking out as they consider a lifelong monthly commitment just to keep access to the sermon editor? Sure, that's rough.

However, this has not changed with the subscription-only model. It was very long ago that (some?) features were sold individually, the reality since over ten years is that people had to either buy a base package which contained a certain bundle of features per level or subscribe.

This is the part that I think some of the Logos/Subscription apologists miss when we speak against the Subscription only model - one of their talking points I have seen is the great deal it is for new people.... Well, for upfront cost - yes, that is true... The VALUE for the cost is where I do not see that argument having a solid foundation.... $380 for the two years for someone new on Max.... After two years, you have to continue with another subscription or you lose the included features and books....

I haven't seen anything from Logos on whether there will be a Logos Basic still... But exactly what features would a new users that owns nothing retain if they do not renew? They do not have any Feature Sets that they own to fall back to and do not qualify for the LFL... So what would the free engine include for those users?

While you technically did not need a subscription in the past to purchase the newest libraries, you did need to purchase the accompanying features if you were not a subscriber. Perhaps you didn't notice this, because the features were built into the libraries. But you have never been able to purchase the newest libraries without either being a subscriber or purchasing the accompanying features.

Many people may not like the subscriptions. Ok, that's fine. I'm not here to convince anyone otherwise. But for the majority of people who purchase resources regularly from Logos, the subscription option will cause less of a strain on their wallet than the traditional purchase options of the past. Allow me to highlight only one of the perks that comes along with the subscription model: You get 5% off of the total price of (almost) every product on logos.com. This relates to the pre-sale price. So, let's say Logos puts a $200 item on sale for 80% off. As a nonsubscriber you pay $40 for that resource. As a subscriber you pay only $30 (now 85% off). Thus, with the purchase of this one resource that you may well have bought anyway, you have saved $10, essentially paying for your monthly Logos Pro subscription. And this doesn't even take into consideration any of the other perks or the money that you save from not having to dish out a large sum every two years for the latest features.

When I bought my gorgeous, unbelievable Orthodox Platinum, it came with a bunch of who-cares features down there at the bottom. It also came with some who-cares books I didn't need.

I never looked at the features or unneeded books as required purchases for my gorgious unbelievable Orthodox Platinum (which I still treasure, by the way). Logos forced them on me (I hid the unwanted books, couldn't hide the features but luckily I've no idea what they were).

Now it's 2025. Sorry DMB ... no Orthodox Platinum for you! (unless I fake a subscription which I'm not going to do ... I don't fake Amazon Prime either).

This is not true. A couple months ago, I could simply buy the sermon builder feature. (I didn't have the money for it at the time.) Now if I want to use it, I must get a subscription.

Over the past several years, I've purchased various bronze, silver and gold bundled libraries without a Logos subscription, having already purchased full feature upgrades separately, even though features were included in those bundles (those bundles were discounted for me due to having already owned features the bundles offered). Point-being, you weren't required to subscribe to purchase those bundles. That can no longer be done in the case of the 2025 bundled libraries (even with those bundles not having features included), and I don't like it at all.

Logos is in an interesting position here, because they spend a lot of money developing features to enhance the reading of their books. If one were only interested in the book, it would be highly advisable to shop around, because Logos usually doesn't have the best price (great sales are the exception). Forcing users to buy the features (or subscribe) is almost necessary or they wouldn't have the revenue to justify the development of more features. But if they didn't develop more features, then people would wonder, "why not Amazon?"

It might work ... the button says 'Try Logos Free'. But I'm afraid (after now 'thinking') what might happen later (apologies) ..,. I really can't afford the new menu coming down. Even if the new menu is an app switch, portions of the layout can get not-remembered (have to rebuild).

Thanks, Graham. I have Logos 10, which based on an earlier post, sounds like it may be the reason that I don't qualify. (For the past decade I've bought every prior update as soon as it came out.)

And as I've said, I'm not anxious to sign up for a subscription I fully intend to drop just to get a deal on something else. I'll either talk myself into subscribing for real, or just not do it. I'm just personally more comfortable that way.

While I cannot show it now, I had the Logos 10 FFS, and came into this through Logos Now and Faithlife Connect. Before They migrated me over, even though I had the FFS, when I went to the subcription page, it showed me the "Free Trial" option for Max, so I figured it was still possible. If you want to get the free trial to access the libraries, maybe consider calling Sales/Customer Service and ask about the free trial?

I just wish they did a both/and - Have subscriptions and the option to buy features with the optional library bundles. I pray that they change their minds on a subscription-only path. I understand this would require more work to have both options set up, but it just seems better. Based on multiple threads, I believe many would agree.

I understand subscriptions are desired by the company to help pay the bill. I understand that some features now require Logos to pay in-house to operate, such as the cloud and AI features. It makes sense to have a source of steady income to pay for those and have money to create new amazing features (while improving older ones). Plus, the more that subscribe, the better it is for the company. I personally am a subscriber because I want to help the company and I want the cloud and AI features (even though the AI is still weak, but I do enjoy the summarization and synopsis).

I just don't understand why they can't have a feature set for those who don't want cloud and AI but for the power and usability of the other features. I don't understand why they can't have an option for those who want to pay the one-time bill. Plus, not everyone can afford a subscription, but they can make a judgment call to pay a one-time fee. I say they can't afford it not because it will equal out or be cheaper if someone bought a feature set every 2 years, but that a subscription model is a never-ending continual purchase (until stopped or death I suppose) unless new people want to lose features. The ultimate downside to this subscription move is the lack of ownership for new people. Maybe I don't understand what comes with the basic free software, but it seems like it doesn't meet the reality behind why people use logos. If I didn't pay for the features, I would still be using blueletterbible, bible gateway, and other free websites, along with a searchable digital library. I pray they give people the option to own non-cloud/AI features.

Lastly, one of the statements in the "new era" video is that Logos is cheaper for the newer people. I disagree. It is cheaper upfront, yes, but not in the long term. This, along with a lack of ownership, makes it hard to recommend the software to people. However, I still do. I just feel like they will be missing out on a lot in terms of what people used to get.

To me, it would be a win-win to have both, but maybe they would be afraid of not many subscribers. I think those who are subscribing will stay subscribed because they enjoy the features. If people have to stop subscribing for a time for whatever reason, at least they have something to come back to instead of nothing. I pray they do a both/and option. It would make it easier to recommend, that is for sure!

Presumably, this was 'the problem'. Their earlier attempts at subscription included choosing a subscription or not. One offered early access to features ... 'Now' but then, they had to actually deliver some features (not easy, on a schedule, and discouraged major efforts). Then, they tried again ('Connect'). That apparently didn't go well either (along with their other business ideas; they tend to lose interest quickly).

Forcing a subscription seems to be Plan C. New owners, etc, etc. Personally, if they would stick to actual 'features' (vs UI changes), it'd probably be a success. But the UI changes, by necessity, mean chaotic implementation, as well as mixed desirability ... impacting 'subscribing'.

We shall see what Plan D delivers (it'll be along, soon now). My guess, they'll force the UI changes to non-subscribers.

Well, Logos is part of a trend that has led me to be content with earlier (perpetual license) versions of software programs I love. I absolutely loved Adobe Lightroom, and upgraded every release... until they went subscription only. I still use the last version I bought over a decade ago and haven't given Adobe a penny since.

I use a financial budgeting and tracking program (YNAB) and I upgraded regularly. Then they went subscription only. I happily use the perpetual license version I bought over 15 years ago that still works great. I haven't given them a penny since.

My music-creation software (Studio One) recently changed to a hybrid model more akin to what Logos is offering (at least now) with Fallback licenses after subscription (if one ceases to subscribe, after a certain period--with Studio One it is one year). I used to pay to upgrade every two years or so but now I'm guessing I'll stretch out my purchases with them even longer, if ever. My current perpetual license gives me a fantastic program as-is. I may find that I continue to use it for the next decade or two as-is, I'm not sure.

So with Logos, I will continue to purchase books through Logos, but my trend looks to continue. My spending will be less with Logos, and I will be content with what I have feature-wise with Logos (I even chose not to do the Full Feature Upgrade in L10, as it wasn't compelling to me).

Of course, Logos will look at their balance sheets and that will be the primary driver looking forward. I just wish they would rethink some of their strategies and policies to become more inclusive. I also know they can't please everyone all the time. I'm fine sitting out the subscription model and hope they do increase their reach and build a much larger customer base. As in my previous examples, I'll be fine. But in each case, I am thankful that I entered each company's ecosystem BEFORE they pivoted to relying on subscriptions. While I love Logos, my endorsement to new people to consider Logos is greatly affected with this new structure, however. This is likely nothing new to those making the decisions at Logos, but I think it is helpful for them to continue to hear this feedback.

I think this is already a (minor) issue with the new subscription...new features seem to be few. The harder part (in my mind) is their inability to advertise what the included free stuff will be, and the inability (or unwillingness) to empower subscribers to have any input in the free ME courses and such. That seems to be a real threat to the entire subscription plan if not fixed.

I'd love to see Logos' SWOTS analysis...I be 'subscription model' is on both their Opportunities and Threats list. (If it's not, it should be.)

Yep ... I wonder what the 'mix' is. Bob used to note a large share were buy-once and done. After that, I assume 'it depends'.

I was sold the day my Libronix arrived with one single resource (I needed). But after that, I felt like my library was both more extensive and more in-depth than the Bible college I attended. That amazed me, and oh so portable.

Plus, my Logos isn't my primary software ... she's Miss Research Assistant. And so, I don't use much of the tools, features, and so forth. Another source/opinion for Book of the Giants (Qumran) is what Miss Research Assistant is thrilled with.

I would expect the mix to be in a state of flux as the younger generations tend to prefer electronic formats and the options for electronic forms is dwindling. I would expect that the low-end user with high expectations it the fastest growing segment.

Maybe so. I hadn't thought much about it, until recently a forumite suggested (I think) that searches would replace libraries. And now I'm wondering if that'll be true. This AM I was reading about arguments on how to put Qumran fragments together. But the arguments were from 30 years ago (including the author of our vaunted DSS English resource, equally dated).

Philosphically, I enjoy, no matter. But a quick web query is probably the better answer than a Logos library ... in the future.

I just wish they did a both/and - Have subscriptions and the option to buy features with the optional library bundles.

The ultimate downside to this subscription move is the lack of ownership for new people.

Lastly, one of the statements in the "new era" video is that Logos is cheaper for the newer people. I disagree. It is cheaper upfront, yes, but not in the long term. This, along with a lack of ownership, makes it hard to recommend the software to people. However, I still do. I just feel like they will be missing out on a lot in terms of what people used to get.

To me, it would be a win-win to have both, but maybe they would be afraid of not many subscribers. I think those who are subscribing will stay subscribed because they enjoy the features. If people have to stop subscribing for a time for whatever reason, at least they have something to come back to instead of nothing. I pray they do a both/and option. It would make it easier to recommend, that is for sure!
