Here is an updated .docx file LogosVerbumDeepDiveIntoDataREBUILD.docx
Since the forum change has been delayed, I've started adding these posts to the previous tip list. See L/V 10 Tip of the Day Note that this list has been moved to the wiki (which itself is moved to the new forum software).
STEP ZERO: People talk – speech data
TOPIC: Introduction
QUESTION: Where does one find direct speech involving a specific person?
SOFTWARE: This information is most accessible in Factbook for the specific person.
ANSWER: Factbook > Reported Speech > choice of featured, speaks to, hears from
- Feature speech comes from a variety of labels hand curated by Logos.
- Speaks to comes from Speakers (Dynamic resource toolbar > Formatting > Markers > Speakers
- Hears from comes from Addressees (Dynamic resource toolbar > Formatting > Markers > Addressees
From Verbum Help
Markers
Adds markers to show hidden data in a book. Use the toggle at the top to show or hide markers.
Addressees
For Bibles, this filter will display small person icons next to text, identifying who is being addressed by the speech. This complements the Speaker Labels visual filter, which identifies the speaker.
Speakers
Displays an icon for referent data which links to the associated Factbook entry for the speaker. Clicking the icon will open the Factbook to the associated speaker, and hovering over the icon will display a tool tip with who the speaker is, and the frequency that person appears in the Bible.[1]
Note that the addressees’ icons have the same behavior as the speakers icons.
QUESTION: What information is shown on hover over an addressee or speaker icon?
ANSWER: The tooltip pulls information from the Factbook:
- natural/supernatural being – embedded in icon
- individual/group – embedded in icon
- male/female – embedded in icon
- name in the form of the Logos label; note this is hyperlinked to the Factbook entry
- a line listing groups and roles associated with the person
- a brief identifying description; note this matches the identifying description in the Factbook entry’s header for the person.
QUESTION: How does one show speaker/addressee information in the Information panel?
ANSWER: The information panel is a tool that opens in a narrow panel on the right.
- Open the Information panel by type Open Information into the Command box (application icon at top/left on application toolbar OR tools > Lookup >Information
- If the Other References section is not showing in the Information panel, open Add on the upper right of the panel to add it.
- If Speakers and/or Addressees are not showing in the Information when you select direct speech in a Bible, open Settings (visible on hover) to add them.
- Remember to set the refresh behavior to click/hover on the panel menu, if necessary.
- Notice that the entries under the Speakers and Addressees icon show:
- natural/supernatural being – embedded in icon
- individual/group – embedded in icon
- male/female – embedded in icon
- name in the form of the Logos label; note this is hyperlinked to the Factbook entry
- a brief identifying description; note this matches the identifying description in the Factbook entry’s header for the person.
QUESTION: Where is reported speech documented?
SOFTWARE: There are two different sources of reported speech – one is Logos analysis of the text for Speaker/Addressee markers, the other as an element within discourse analysis. They are not interchangeable.
ANSWER: There are multiple sources of similar data, each with their own documentation.
- Husser, Lydia. Reported Speech: Dataset Documentation. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2017.
- Runge, Steven, and Joshua Westbury, eds. The Lexham Discourse Hebrew Bible: Glossary. Lexham Discourse Hebrew Bible. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012.
- Runge, Steven E., and Joshua R. Westbury, eds. The Lexham Discourse Hebrew Bible: Introduction. Lexham Discourse Hebrew Bible. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012.

QUESTION: How does one find the speaker/addressee information in the Context Menu?
SOFTWARE: This feature is automatic if you own the reverse interlinear to the Bible and you own the Direct Speech dataset. Dataset ownership is a nuisance to check:
- Open the Application Menu (vertical 3 dots at the bottom (right) of the application toolbar.
- Select About Verbum (or About Logos).
- On the left side, a narrow panel shows the owned datasets.
- Under the heading Speakers, you will see two datasets.
- DB:DEUTEROCANON-REPORTED-SPEECH
- DB:REPORTED-SPEECH
- Open a Bible for which you own the reverse interlinear.
- Select a bit of text within a direct speech.
- Right click to open the Context Menu.
- Select Speaker or Addressee on the right (tab side); they follow the Biblical event group. Note they use the same icon as is used by the Markers in the Bible. Note that there is a direct link to the Factbook as an action option.
QUESTION: How do I search on speaker and addressee data?
SOFTWARE: This data may be used as search terms in Bible, Book, and Morph searches. The answer below is based on a Bible search only to illustrate the cookbook and template behavior.
ANSWER: Method 1: template (simple)
- Open the search panel, most commonly through the search icon on the application toolbar.
- Select Bible search.
- In the introductory information in the blue box, click on Use search templates.
- In the sidebar on the left scroll down to Speakers and Addresses. There you will find the following options:
- A person speaks about something
- One person speaks to another person
- One person speaks to another person about something
- One person asks another person a question
- One person gives another person a command
- Click on one of the options.
- Fill in the input fields in the popup mini-window, carefully selecting an entry from the drop-down selection menu.
- Click on Search
- Enjoy your results
For my example, I chose one person speaks to another person using Moses as the speaker and Joshua (son of Nun). The search argument built was speaker:person:Moses INTERSECTS addressee:person:"Joshua (Son of Nun)"
Method 2: cookbook (intermediate)
- Open the search panel, most commonly through the search icon on the application toolbar.
- Select Bible search.
- Scroll down to Search Keywords which has two relevant entries:
- Speaker speaker:God
- Addressee addressee:Moses
- Click on the blue hyperlinked text for the option you need.
- This moves the text into the search argument. I chose speaker:God. Now replace God with the person of choice.
- Hit enter.
- Enjoy your results.
For my example, I chose speaker:God and replaced God with Moses. The search argument build was speaker:Moses
Method 3: direct entry (advanced)
- Open the search panel, most commonly through the search icon on the application toolbar.
- Select Bible search.
- Type speaker:person:Moses INTERSECTS addressee:person:"Joshua (Son of Nun)" into the search box. Note that the input field provides hints and drop-down selection lists so this is not as hard as it appears.
- Hit enter.
- Enjoy your results
Method 4: Bible browser (simple)
- Open the search panel, most commonly through the search icon on the application toolbar.
- Select Bible search.
- In the introductory information in the blue box, click on Use Bible browser.
- On the left facet selection side, click on Reported speech to expand it.
- Expand speaker. Note as it customary for facets, the names are in order of number of occurrences. To find a specific person, use the find box at the top.
- Continue adding facets to meet your needs
My breadcrumb trail from replicating the search by method 1 was Start > Speakers: Moses > Addressees: Joshua (Son of Nun). Both methods selected the same 10 verses. Note there are some technical reasons why the results may not match when labels are involved, when they don’t match the cause is easily identified.
Method 5:Context menu
Remember your cursor must be in the reported speech for the tagging to appear.
- Open a Bible for which you own the reverse interlinear.
- Select a bit of text within a direct speech.
- Right click to open the Context Menu.
- Select Speaker or Addressee on the right (tab side). Note they use the same icon as is used by the Markers in the Bible. Note that there is a direct link to the Factbook as an action option.
- Select the type of search you wish to run:
- Inline
- Bible
- This Book
- All Open
- Books
- All
- Hit enter in the search argument of the pane that was entered.
- Enjoy your results.
The search argument generated for Moses as Speaker was speaker:Moses.
