Need Help with Speed Issues for Gold Master Release

Hey Everyone,

Let me say I am completely thrilled to have the final release of the Mac version of Logos 4. Thank you to all the developers for your incredibly hard work.

I just have a quick question regarding my experience with speed and if I am doing anything wrong. I just ran a Go Command Search for "Acts 6" in which it took 3 minutes and 50 seconds for the passage guide to finish loading (ie for the each of the spinning spirals to stop spinning). It took over a minute and a half to get any commentaries to show up. So my question is, is this normal? I have experienced this in the Alphas and Betas, but I assumed the speed issues would be much tighter by the master release, so I am wondering now if I have a problem on my system. I know the Go Command bar brings up a lot, and I have not changed any of the default settings on Passage Guide so I could probably cut down the time by cutting out Biblical People or something, but 4 minutes seems precariously long for a default search on "Acts 6" to complete.

So the main question is, are other Mac users experiencing similar speed results for this kind of search, and if so are the Windows users experiencing the same? I truly want to use Logos as my main Bible study tool, since I have invested in so many incredible resources here, but waiting 4 minutes before I can even begin working (not to mention my scrolling is still very clunky in the guides) feels like a hindrance.

I know the developers have helped people in the past with speed issues after looking at their logs, so I will post mine (although I don't seem to have the SyncClientErrors.log, so I only compressed the other three. I apologize if I have done this wrong). Any help is overwhelmingly appreciated!

I have concluded a few things using L4 Win and Mac:

1. I never leave all the sections open to populate, but open them as needed and then close them. It slows me down for what I want to see and often times distracts me with too much information. I learned this using Libronix (Logos 3 for Windows).

2. Both L4 Mac and Win seem to require some time to settle in. I think the program continues to open processes even after the windows appear. Also, the commentary sections seem to open faster after the initial opening.

I try and remember everything this program is doing and as such lower my expectations a bit and manage the use of the program better.

If you are indeed experiencing problems beyond what I experience and have learned to manage, hopefully a Logos rep will be able to assist you further.

My time from clicking on the Logos icon in the dock till getting acts 6 passage guide open and initial commentaries done took 58 seconds in total for me. Macbook pro i7.

Scholar's Platinum library - open blank layout - Passage Guide with all sections open for John 1 took 1 minute 14 seconds for all spinners to disappear on 2.8 GHz Quad Core i7 iMac. Changing John 1 to Acts 6 took 51 seconds to complete.

The same test on my Core2 Duo with 4G took under two minutes for John 1 and about 1 minute 20 sec for Acts 6. I too have the Platinum plus many many more. But I never use everything in the PG and never bite off a chapter at a time.

Hi,

I just ran the same test on my core 2 2Gb 13in Macbook and total load time from the 'Go bar' of the home page with Acts 6 was 1min 24sec

Many others have made good and useful comments on your post. I just wanted to add one thought. Acts 6 is a very large portion of Scripture to search all at once. If you limit your search to a pericope, the response will be much faster.

Of course, if you are just doing a speed test, you will want to use a large selection.

For me the parallel passages section is slow. I wonder if that is slowing everything else down?

I think you hit the nail on the head with this analysis. That feature could use some optimization.

Of course, if you are just doing a speed test, you will want to use a large selection.

By way of comparison, Logos 4.1 RC 2 on Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 GHz running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Passage Guide for Acts 6 took 49 seconds and John 1 took 42 seconds (rerunning Acts 6 took 21 seconds).

Logos 4.1 RC2 on VirtualBox 3.2.8 (with 2 CPU's) on 2.8 GHz Quad Core i7 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Passage Guide for Acts 6 took 59 seconds and John 1 took 39 seconds (rerunning Acts 6 took 18 seconds - files cached from previous search).

Logos 4 Mac Gold on 2.8 GHz Quad Core i7 running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 with 64 bit kernel, Passage Guide for Acts 6 took 55 seconds while John 1 took 1 minute 11 seconds (rerunning Acts 6 took 51 seconds ).

Note: timing from Passage Guide start until "Stop" button disappears (more consistent than scrolling Passage Guide looking for spinners to disappear) - did have My Content and Handouts sections collapsed (since Logos 4 Mac Gold not have Handouts)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. It looks like my system is running slower than everyone else's not sure why but this is at least good to know that it is perhaps more my system and not the program. I am using a 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro. I'll see if maybe turning off some things in the Passage Guide helps. Thanks again everyone!

You might also want to make sure you don't have much else running at the same time.
