Can Logos be used as database for sermons and illistrations

I'm new to Logos for mac and I'm hoping to be able to keep all of my info in one place. Such as the sermons I write and illustrations that I find so that I can search them later. I've tried using notes and clippings but this seems like a very ineffective way to do this. Is there some other way to accomplish this?

Hi Jennifer,

At the moment you are limited to what you have discovered. Libronix 3, the Logos 4 predecssor had a sermon file add-in ( http://www.logos.com/products/details/3164.) At this point it is slated to be introduced into Logos 4 in 2011 based on the current timetable for missing features ( http://www.logos.com/logos4/missingfeatures) from Libronix 3 to be re-introduced to Logos 4 but no more specific information is available on the timing.

There is quite a bit of information on the product page for the L3 Sermon File add-in including videos of how it worked. It allowed for the storing of both sermons and illustrations and converted them into a book that could be accessed from your library, so you could search the material and have it show in your passage guide.

If you've opted to receive e-mail from Logos, it's not unlikely that there will be some sort of announcement when we publish it; the news is also likely to show up in your Logos 4 home page.

How will I know when it becomes available?

We haven't been told, but could expect this will be an extra cost add-on or at least require our permission to activate, like the Logos 3 version. So when it is available I think we'll learn about it here, on the Logos blog, or on the Logos web site. You can subscribe to the Logos NewsWire if you haven't done so and it could be announced there.

One of the problems I have wrestled with through the years is how to organize all of the endless collections quotes, texts, research, web pages etc that I collect and somehow pull them into sermons and papers even books.

I have discovered a software group out of England which has developed a program for writers.

It is called "Scrivener" and is very inexpensive, but awesome in power and works beautifully with Logos4 and is written specifically for the Mac, although there is a Windows version about to be released. Copy and paste with references and footnotes is flawless.

You can keep all of your info in one place, just like you asked about.

You can collect all kinds of reference quotes, web pages, images, what ever you want and organize them in a Research Folder, then as you use them drag them into the Draft folder to write and polish up your sermon. It is Awesome. I use it for all kinds of things that require notes etc.

They have a free 30 day trial version.

You might also want to check out DEVONthink. I have the full DEVONthink Pro Office and find it invaluable for storing PDFs (which I often create simply by printing to PDF from a website), notes, email, etc. You can create multiple databases and multiple folders within each database. You can access DT from any other program through numerous channels. There's a "universal inbox" allowing you to throw information at DT and sort later.

It's Mac-only, so it's very tightly integrated into the OS.

And I believe you'll find that many of its best features are parallel to what the professional Bible software packages offer in regard to sophisticated searches and analysis of data. Some people use it as a complete Finder replacement for storing all of one's documents. I don't do this, but I do currently have over 300,000 documents, notes, and other files in DT from which I can build concordances almost instantaneously.

If you have the full DTPO as I do, you can scan documents directly into DT and it will OCR the text upon import so that the content is completely catalogued.

There's an iOS version of DT about to be released any day (it's already been submitted to Apple) that will let the user sync selected (or even all) data from one's Mac to an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Use of DT doesn't preclude use of programs like Scrivener. In fact, there's a recent discussion that has been started on the DT forums regarding the use of Scrivener and DT together.

Since I previously had the sermon and illustration file add-on, will I have to repurchase it, also the same for Personal Book Builder as well.
