Bandwidth and performance as it relates to offline books

If I download books for offline use on the iPad, do they ONLY get used when I'm offline? Or is the app smart enough to make use of them even in online mode in order to minimize bandwidth usage and maximize performance? If they are only used offline, them I will only download the ones that I plan on reading offline...if they are utilized even in online mode, them it makes sense to download every book I might make use of.

If a book is downloaded, the app will use the offline data in many situations, even when you are online.
