Can I either Create a Series or Prioritize a Collection?

I have several groups of library resources that are not pre-categorized into a Series (though they should be). Examples include issues of BAR and Christian History magazines. I want to prioritize them as a group.

So, can I edit their metadata and enter them into a new Series I create?

Alternatively, I have already put them in a Collection, but can I prioritize a Collection (as opposed to a Series)?

No. There is no user access to metadata.

The option we have is to ask Logos to give a series tag to these two magazines, which makes sense. If you are comfortable working in the wiki (it isn't hard) there is a page devoted to making these suggestions. http://wiki.logos.com/Metadata_correction_proposals If you'd rather not mess with the wiki, I'll be glad to add them to the list there.

OK, I edited the wiki, but that's largely unsatisfying.

If prioritization is such a major feature for customization and productivity, it has a terribly restricted toolset.

Once you already have a Collection, you could create your own Passage Guide or Exegetical Guide and add these Collections to you customized Guide. This would force Logos to search there when you use these Guides. I actually created a Guide with only Collections. I named it "Collections 1" because I may want to create another like it with a different group of Collections. I find this approach to be very helpful.

Can I ask why you want to prioritise them as a group? I'm struggling to think of what this would achieve. (Personally, I only prioritise resource that have a headword or Bible reference index, such as dictionaries, Bibles and commentaries.)

What was the problem you reported, Jannie? Others have reported a wish for a Series but that has always been handled thru the Metadata Proposals in the wiki.

Simply because I like to include historical context in my preaching. So, for example, if I'm preaching on Jesus calming the storm, I want to know BAR has published photos of the type of boat Jesus and his disciples would have been using. Usually if a story in BAR has direct connection to biblical passage, the passage citation is listed in the article, which I assume would be caught in any passage guide search. So I want BAR results high in my list of stuff in my library.

That and it's just plain good metadata management for a series to be labeled a series.

Quite true! And I agree it's annoying when it's ommitted.

If I've understood you correctly, that assumption is wrong, I'm afraid.

The commentaries section of the passage guide won't show any information from BAR, because it's not a commentary.
If you add a Collections section to your passage guide to include BAR or other resources then it will find the references as you suggest. But these sections don't use your prioritisations - it's just a search, and your prioritisations don't affect searches.

What, really? Priority doesn't affect searches? Just particular types of content like Bibles and Commentaries? I guess I was assuming that once the Passage Guide (or whatever tool) finished listing the official Bibles, Commentaries, etc., that it would at least put my other general-but-prioritized materials at the top of the general list.

Prioritization affects the order of books following a lookup on an Index value (called keylinking). You can see what Indexes a book has if you look at its Resource Information - the i icon in its toolbar. A commentary will have a Bible index, so that its articles can be accessed by Bible reference; exactly the same as a Bible resource. Any book can be searched for bible references scattered through the text but the results are not affected by Prioritization.

In Passage Guide:-

results in the Commentaries section are presented according to resource priority - after a lookup in each resource.
results in the Collections section are Ranked - the same as a Basic Search for the passage.

So if the BAR series are not indexed by Bible there will be no results in the Commentaries section (and no point in Prioritizing it); but you can include them in the Collections section.

It's still very worthwhile prioritising, but as Dave points out, it's only worth doing for resources that are indexed by headword (usually dictionaries), or bible reference (usually Bibles and commentaries).

Unless you add a collection into your commentaries section. I have noted a bug (in an earlier thread) in that certain passages don't give me my prioritizations in order when they used to.

if you edit your passage guide by commentaries, you can add your own collection of commentaries so Logos only searches through that (I'm pretty sure you knew this I must not have explained myself properly).The results that come are arranged according to your prioritizations in order. But lately Logos hasn't arranged them properly in some passages.
