help on defining a collection about "history"

HI,

I am trying tot define a collection about "history of church" in general, including Encyclopedia or Dictionaries and theological history of the church. I tried this resources matching below:

title:"church history", "christian church", "encyclopedia of christianity", "christian history", "history of the jewish", "apostolic age"

I am trying to improve this matching because I ended up with some commentaries in my collection as you can see in image below.

I know I can use the "minus these resources" option, but I would like to do it in an automatic way, getting rid of bible commentaries.

I tried to use the "ANDNOT type: bible commentary" at the end of the filter but it did not worked very well, I do not know why.

What is the best way to improve the resources matching?

Just guessing since I can't see what you tried that did not work, but I suspect this is the problem; you typed

"ANDNOT type: bible commentary"

which should probably be

ANDNOT type:"Bible commentary"

as yours will do type:bible and then continue processing the line from there - you must include bible commentary all in quotes to include it as the argument for type.

Also, don't be afraid to use parens () to group things like a bunch of ANDNOTs, etc. if you have to...

Try that out and see if it works better?

Hi Romulo,

There's three problems with your collection as it stands:

The title: at the beginning will only apply to the first phrase ("church history") at the moment. So "christian church" and the other phrases will match anywhere in the subject and description, not just the title. If you want only title matches, the correct syntax is title:("church history", "christian church", "encyclopedia of christianity", "christian history", "history of the jewish", "apostolic age") - note the parentheses.
Adding ANDNOT would also require parentheses to ensure it applies to the whole collection. Like maths, 2+2+2+2+2/5 is not the same as (2+2+2+2+2)/5. The first sum gives 8.4, the second gives 2. So title:("church history", "christian church", "encyclopedia of
christianity", "christian history", "history of the jewish", "apostolic
age") ANDNOT type:commentary would remove all the commentaries.
You'd definitely benefit from searching subjects as well as titles. Here's my collection building strategy:
- Build the collection as best I can using title searching (just as you've already done).
- Sort the collection by subject. This shows which subjects are most likely to be relevant to your collection.
- Adds those subjects to your collection like this OR subject:("Church History", 270).
- As you add subjects to your collection, your collection might grow and reveal even more relevant subjects. Add them too. It might also show unhelpful subjects (like 20th century history, which you may not want). You can remove them. (Don't remove irrelevant subjects, just remove subjects where you are certain you want no books that match.)

I wil use your suggestion to my history collection. It is perfect.

by the way....I can see augustine in the middle of your suggestion. I would like to show you what I did, inspired by your videos, to create a collection of favorite authors. I always want to have a collections of the church fathers individually. But it is too difficult to do it with the Early Church Fathers Protestant Edition (37 Vols.) [DOWNLOAD] because I it is not organized by authors. So did only with Augustine and Crisostomo. That is what I did:

Works of Augustine

title:"Nicene and Post-Nicene fathers First series" AND title:"volume I", "volume II", "volume III", "Volume IV", "Volume V", "Volume VI", "Volume VII", "Volume VIII"

Works of Crisostomo

title:"Nicene and Post-Nicene fathers First series" AND title:"volume IX", "volume X", "volume XI", "Volume XII", "Volume XIII", "Volume XIV"

and then I made a collection of collection with authors dragging all my collections named "works of..." to a new collection named "favorite authors"

What do you think about this? Is my syntax collation for "works of..." is ok?

Looks good - and it works, though it's not quite right. You need to add some parentheses

title:"Nicene and Post-Nicene fathers First series" AND title:("volume

At the moment your search will look for "volume I" in the title, but "volume II" etc. in any field. That works with this example, but it might not work in another example. The parentheses ensure that all the volumes have to be found in the titles.
