Why does Logos tag some verbs as "either middle or passive"?

I was running this search hoping to locate all the places where ἐν τῷ is followed by a present (either middle or passive) infinitive.

"ἐν τῷ" BEFORE 1 WORD morph.g:VP[MP]N

It returns 12 results in 6 verses in the NA28. But it doesn't return four verses (Luke 9:29,33; 10:35; 17:11) where the present infinitive is tagged "either middle or passive".

What is the point of this designation? It has the effect of hiding results.

If both of those would be a valid parsing, then it would be improper for it to be designated one or the other as that would be an interpretative issue.

You may wish to adjust your morph query to one of the following:

    • morph.g:VP[MU]N - middle and "either middle or passive"
    • morph.g:VP[PU]N - passive and "either middle or passive"
    • morph.g:VP[MPU]N - middle, passive, and "either middle or passive"

The last query, in particular, will add in the four results you said were missing.

    Thanks Nord.

The designation "either middle or passive" may be a helpful interpretive insight but it is unhelpful when doing a morphological search. As it stands in Logos if I search for all the middle forms of an infinitive or all the passive forms of an infinitive it will not return Luke 9:29 (προσεύχεσθαι). How can that be? It's either a middle or a passive. But Logos in their wisdom tags it as "either middle or passive" which has the effect of hiding it from a search parameter which should find it.

    Bradley,

Thanks. I did figure this out on my own as a work around. But that's the point.
