Logos 4 runs, and is adequate for reading resources (once it's managed to start up). Guides take painfully long to generate. It's faster than researching using dead trees, but it can be frustrating to wait. Indexing takes a long time.

It's interesting how much having a discrete graphics card helped my overall score. Logos 4 runs very well on this system, although it does take about 25 seconds to get up and running the first time after booting up (7 seconds for subsequent starts). I'll benchmark my office computer later when I go down to the church building.

I suspect he is running this benchmark on a server at his place of employment not on his personal desktop. The CPU alone runs between $1300 and $1600 depending on where you buy it. The OS retails for $3,999 and the graphics card goes for around $3,000. Finally, he is running 32 gig of memory. Not your average desktop system by any means so it really isn't a fair comparison to the hardware most of us run. Sort of like comparing a Ford Focus to a top model Lambergini.

HP Elitebook 8540w

Runs Logos very well with a fairly large library (2500+) with multiple linked tabs open on a double monitor setup. This is a heavy laptop (mobile workstation really), but worth the weight compared with the functionality. I run the 32 bit operating system so the 4gb of ram doesn't show - don't know that I need to go 64bit after reading some of the posts.

Hi;

Sluggish searches, but it never times out and crashes. I got it to take to the creek, or to the mountaintop. A Kindle on steroids. It does all I expected of it and more. Naturally, I have a PC for home study. ( over 1000 benchmark )

Edit: It's also very cool for inductive/markup study at a WiFi coffee shop, etc. It fits nicely in a leather bible cover, and the 9 cell battery keeps you up and running for 5 hours+.[:)]

Here we go ... using Parallels 6 on an 8Gb MBP, with 4Gb allocated to the VM

Just check out the Graphics Score!

L4 works nicely on the VM at least it did until Tuesday when it stopped working altogether because the graphics would not work (see this thread). Now I have run the tests I am beginning to think Parallels / W7 fault. No other apps seem to have drawing issues ...

If there is anybody else with a current MBP and Parallels who could do this and let me know what the graphics test is I would be grateful. (Go on ... see if you can beat the high score!)

I went on a road trip last week and turned off the nVidia graphics card to save power.

Those were the stats posted above, and more importantly, why I had graphics problems with my VM ... the intel graphic chips.

The scores below are the difference, still not stunning but acceptable .. and more importantly L4 now works [:D] ... the new reading view and verse recognition in notes ... oh the luxury!

Frederick, your system seems pretty good but your Drive Write Speed is almost the slowest reported. Your graphics cards seems acceptable. Logos requires good disk and graphics performance, and ample memory - you have 2 of 3. You may want to explore options for a faster disk or an SSD, it might make a world of difference if it's possible to upgrade...

Now I realize this is misleading.

For example, Don's Drive Write Speed is actually much higer than mine but the reason I got a good Hardware score is because my Primary Partition Capacity is larger, which in many cases will not improve performance at all (i.e. when it is just empty, unutilized, never-needed space). This is exaclty my case since I devoted the boot disk only for OS; everything else is elsewhere, distributed in separate hard disks. So, my overall score should not be that high, I think.

The write speed and Primary Partition size are not that relevant to L4 eg. my L4 is on a different partition. The other 3 test subjects are more relevant.

I have been out of town, so it took a little longer to post the updated numbers and review of the SSD.

The new drive didn't change the NovaBench numbers much. (As Expected) Although the performance is better, it is an 80GB SSD, compared to a 640 GB HD. Capacity is a large factor in the Novabench scores. The Windows Experience Index seems to better reflect the improved handling of the machine. It increased from 5.9 to 7.5. ( on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9) All of the terms such as MBs/S and calculations per second are relative and obscure. The one that really matters is the smiles per second scale. On that one, the numbers are off the chart. An SSD boot drive is well worth the expense. No, I don't work for, or own stock in Intel.[:P]

The score of my old one (Toshiba duo-core) is about one third of the new one (Asus G73JW) but the increase in speed with Logos is not (`3x faster) what I would have expected. Why? And maybe the answers will help us Logos users in the future when we go to upgrade again.

BTW - Dave, you said the HD write speed and primary partition capacity is pretty much a non - factor with Logos. Do you mean A SDD hard drive (like what Abi upgraded to) will not make searches "snappier" ? will not noticibly affect speed / performance of L4?

So what do these scores mean in terms of better performance / faster searches / etc. within Logos?

My first guess is CPU related, but the score of Asus [514] crushed my Toshiba [215] but the Toshiba CPU speed is: 2.26GHz @ 2267 MHz comp. w/ Asus: 1.73GHz @ 1734 MHz (although burst speeds of the i7 are supposed to be much higher).

Secondly, the Toshiba Hardware test scored 27 while my Asus only 19 (both are 7200PPM). Would not a SSD increase the score and if so increase performance some? I thought I did my research before buying, but this is not adding up.

From the look of this thread, Novabench is weighted towards videocards which perform well in OpenGL (rather than DirectX), and fast hard drives. I note that it doesn't seem to weight RAM volume and speed or videocard RAM volume quite as highly, and the apparent preference for cards which do well in OpenGL is interesting. I may be wrong, but that's what I see at a first glance. I'd really like to know which specs Logos 4 prefers.

Logos 4 on my system is usable. I suspect my biggest Achilles heel is the HDD. I have found that my HDD is the bottleneck of my system. At times Logos 4 is quite quick, but the menus, command bar tend to lag significantly.

Getting a new laptop February 2011. Looking for a Core i7 with 8GB Ram, 1 GB ATI dedicated graphics and a 7200 rpm 1TB HDD. I truly hope that would be sufficient.

I think what confuses us is the thought that bench scores will automatically Translate to better performance where Logos is concerned. Nova-bench rates on a scale designed to analyze the overall computing experience. They see a need for large storage capacity. They score big for a massive HD whereas Logos only benefits from the GBs it takes to store the software and resources. ( as demonstrated by your 2 drives, The larger one scores better, even though the write speed is much slower.) In my case, I upgraded to an 80GB SSD from a 640GB 7200 drive. The startup time of Logos was reduced from 10-12 sec. to 4 sec. and searches showed massive improvement. However, the Nova-Bench score only increased from 1354 to 1382. It simply does not reflect the actual gains the SSD provided. ( I still have the 640 GB drive for storage, But Nova-Bench only reads the primary drive ) On the other hand, the note taking issue is still intermittent. I firmly believe it is an issue that no amount of computer speed will resolve.

What I didn't tell everyone is that my XPS 600 developed a problem with the motherboard, and I bought this new one entirely, and I hate to admit this, on credit with Dell. I hate bills and I believe I should be debt free, but it was either have a computer or not and I chose to have one. So all envy should remember I am owing every month. [8o|] Also I paid right about $2,500 for this system. The good news is that five years ago, a top end comparable machine would be double that price.

There is always a faster machine, such as life. The post by Thomas Bourega with a score of 1797 shows that! [Y]

Logos runs extremely fast. Of course, I have two SSD's in a Raid 0 configuration. I built this computer almost 2 years ago specifically with the logos specs in mind. Put in the SSD's over christmas-and put my original velocitiraptors (10,000 RPM) also in a Raid 0 config and use it for storage (all my docs, music, pics, basically everything but the OS and logos).

Jems; I've wanted to do exactly what you have done with your hard drives. That is about as good as it can get for that part of your hardware. Ever since hard drives have been around, we have waited for them as being the slowest part of the computer. I thought that the SSD's would have come out years ago before they have. My system is a pair of 7200 rpm RAID 0 at 1.4 terabytes. The write speed is 162 MB/s. I have been thinking about after my warranty for this Dell is over, getting a couple SSD drives to boot from.

Did you overclock your CPU too? The speed is a bit high for the 940.

I am surprised that you aren't gettting a better score than this with SSD's in RAID configuration. My score for the hard drive is 20 with just a run of the mill 500 GB Seagate drive.

Along those same lines I installed a single 40 GB SSD and installed WIndows 7 on it in a dual boot configuration with my existing system. Though I saw my boot time cut in half I didn't see much increase in overall performance and my Benchmark on it was only 12. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed. I wiped the drive and returned it. I am beginning to think that SSD's are over rated. Or perhaps it is just the particular model I chose to try out.

This configuration is close to the absolute minimum for Logos 4. The main weaknesses of this old system are the single core processor and slow HD. My microATX motherboard has all the best pieces but they just won't do anymore. Lousy performance for a desktop. Too bad I'm a seminary student and don't really have the means to upgrade :P

Some of its loyal long time users only can afford to buy "new outdated" net books runing windows xp home addition.

It might be a little slow, but it is still a lot better then my original CompuBiblia - Logos 2.0[;)]

It has worked fine for powepoint presentacions. [:)]

It does not weigh too much, is small. It fits in my older laptop carrying case (from my old hp that died), along with my spanish bible and songbook. [:D]

That is an integrated graphics score - the same as I get on my Power-Saving GPU. Did you run the test on battery power? Your NVidia High-Performance GPU should be capable of a score around 150-160, similar to my ATI "middle class" video card. I can right click the Windows Desktop to switch between GPU's.

I think any score in the 200s and up will serve. I had hoped that by getting a faster machine with 8 Gb of memory I would eliminate a problem which I have experienced with adding to notes files. I still, however, experience the greyed screen and the spinning pizza from time to time. I'm not sure what causes this, but it seems that having a more powerful machine does not cure it. If you're buying in a store get a machine with Windows Experience index at least 5.9, otherwise get a machine similar to those with a Novabench score at least 300 (Graphics component should be at least 30 and RAM at least 100, even for a laptop).

I find the scores of the new Sandy Bridge systems quite intersting, I am running an older quad-core system (Q8400) that I have overclocked by about 20% and it scores in the same range as the newer systems. Knowing what I know about the new systems I am inclined to question the validity of Novabench scores in determining a systems true capabilities.

Lots of interesting scores. What can we take from this - other than Nova score envy?

Is there any agreement on what Nova score it takes to run Logos 4 effectively? Or what system requirements are needed? Any suggestions for someone looking to buy a new laptop?

I would be interested in people's thoughts on this.

Both of my laptops (a 4-year old Dell Inspiron 1520 and a HP mini 110 netbook which is pretty new but is an older model) run Logos 4 admirably well I think. I certainly don't have amazing NovaBench scores, but I think there are optimizations you can make. (Particularly in the realm of RAM/memory and hard drive - I upgraded my Dell to a 7200-RPM drive with a good amount of cache and the difference was night and day.) I've always operated on a budget of $500 or less for computers (I usually build my own desktops) and have yet to surpass the performance of my Dell.
