This is a Dell Precision M4400 notebook.  I purchased it last March specifically because of the Logos 4 upgrade.  The good news: I got the sales rep to knock about $200 off the price. The bad news: the new i-Series processors came out about 6 weeks later!  :(

I didn't post my results but my Sony Vaio laptop had a total of 343, ram 106, cpu 201, graphics 10, hardware 25.  The graphics results, which are Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M, seemed rather sad.  I have upgraded my desktop graphics and it was easy enough to do.  I was wondering about suggestions for a graphic upgrade and the difficulty of installing it. I also use two displays if that enters into the equation.  Thanks.

Scott, a lot depends on what machine you are coming from.  My older Latitude D520 with integrated graphics (shared memory) was unreliable running Logos 4: it would sometimes freeze for a few seconds, then thaw out.  Scary.  The M4400 runs circles around it.

On the other hand, this summer at a Camp Logos I sat beside a guy with a nice i-5 processor. His scrolled more smoothly with panels linked and/or the reverse interlinear open.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the tech hill, yet the price point between processor classes remains steep.  I am not sure I could have afforded a comparable machine with Intel's new chips. At the same time this dual core beast is going to feel obsolete more quickly.  Overall I'm glad I purchased what I did, when I did.  I'm just real careful who I sit next to when the notebooks come out.  :)

I would say this is probably the bottom limit of acceptable for L4. I have been thinking about upgrading since I installed it.  It can get the work done but it requires some patience. Perhaps God is using this as a means of grace.

Steve, we must think alike or something -- I'm not only thinking of buying a Dell Precision like you bought, but I'm still running a Lat D520.  [:)]

I do get occasional freezing for a few seconds.  I've read that happens with some faster PCs too, which made me a bit wary about upgrading.

My D520 might be newer or spec'd differently than yours, it has a core 2 duo and 7200 rpm drive, and I turn off unnecessary processes some apps try to run (in msconfig), so maybe my situation isn't quite as bad as yours was.

Anyways, I'm encouraged to read that your new Dell doesn't have that freezing problem. I will probably go that route. Thanks for that feedback.

Now I realize this is misleading.

For example, Don's Drive Write Speed is actually much higer than mine but the reason I got a good Hardware score is because my Primary Partition Capacity is larger, which in many cases will not improve performance at all (i.e. when it is just empty, unutilized, never-needed space). This is exaclty my case since I devoted the boot disk only for OS; everything else is elsewhere, distributed in separate hard disks. So, my overall score should not be that high, I think.

    gabe.

The write speed and Primary Partition size are not that relevant to L4 eg. my L4 is on a different partition. The other 3 test subjects are more relevant.

Scott, I'd be happy to forward a copy of my invoice to you if you'd like to read the detailed specs. I have been out of town, so it took a little longer to post the updated numbers and review of the SSD.

The new drive didn't change the NovaBench numbers much. (As Expected) Although the performance is better, it is an 80GB SSD, compared to a 640 GB HD. Capacity is a large factor in the Novabench scores. The Windows Experience Index seems to better reflect the improved handling of the machine. It increased from 5.9 to 7.5. ( on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9)  All of the terms such as MBs/S and calculations per second are relative and obscure. The one that really matters is the smiles per second scale. On that one, the numbers are off the chart. An SSD boot drive is well worth the expense. No, I don't work for, or own stock in Intel.[:P]

Just got a new netbook: MSI Wind 12 U230 L-087US

It's no speed demon, but it's small! How does it run Logos 4?   W e l l . . . k i n d   o f   s l o w l y .     The display is pretty good, but building a passage guide takes awhile.  It took all day to index. Literally.  I was doing some other things at the same time (moving files, etc.), but believe me, it took 8 to 10 hours.

BUT, I didn't by the netbook for speed, or even for Logos.  I'm just glad to see that Logos 4 runs on it.

This looks useful and very interesting to see the wide range of results people are getting. I wonder if we might be able to come up with recommendation for a minimal benchmark people would want to have on NovaBench to make Logos run acceptably fast? (But I guess everyone's definition of "acceptably fast" will be unique.)

I think Rosie has a great idea. It WOULD be nice if there was a benchmark performance standard for making Logos 4 work. Like Rosie, I wouldn't BEGIN to judge what another would call "acceptable," but I did take a little time to crunch the numbers from the replies to this thread. Here's what I found:

    • The average Novabench score was 536
    • The top and bottom scores were 1398 and 80
    • Six had a score over 1000
    • Seven had a score under 200

My notebook score was 479 and I find it to be plenty fast for Logos 4. Not exactly snappy, but above "adequate."

Some misc. notes: If a user upgraded and posted both scores and I caught it I only recorded the higher score. If a user listed two machines I counted both results.

Here is a simple chart. To my eye, most users had a score under 600.

Thanks for the time and effort to do this work - greatly appreciated.

My score was 268 - significantly towards the left - and I find that Logos speed is quite acceptable.

It would be interesting to know how many people with machines to the right of this graph still have performance issues.

I did some very expensive research in this field. I believe my last score was 1382. A substantial outlay is required to reach that score. And yes there are still performance issues, especially in the note taking area. Did the new machine improve the overall performance? ... Absolutely. However, The machine can only process the data that is fed into it.

Thanks, Steve! My laptop was one of the "under 200" ones (197). It is pretty painful running Logos on it. It's not that old a machine and it runs everything else just fine, including having dozens of apps open at a time and multitasking like crazy between them. But it's embarrassing trying to show off Logos to friends when I'm out and about with my laptop. I keep having to apologize for it ("sorry it's so slow, but I've got a slow laptop") while we wait for many many seconds for a Biblical Places map to show up. Nobody would want to buy Logos after seeing me demo it on my laptop. I don't like having to buy a new computer just for one piece of software that taxes it too much, but I suppose eventually I will have to.

I like being able to gauge the strengths of my old laptop compared to my new one. But it raises questions. The score of my old one (Toshiba duo-core) is about one third of the new one (Asus G73JW) but the increase in speed with Logos is not (`3x faster) what I would have expected. Why? And maybe the answers will help us Logos users in the future when we go to upgrade again.

BTW - Dave, you said the HD write speed and primary partition capacity is pretty much a non - factor with Logos. Do you mean A SDD hard drive (like what Abi upgraded to) will not make searches "snappier" ? will not noticibly affect speed / performance of L4?

Secondly, the Toshiba Hardware test scored 27 while my Asus only 19 (both are 7200PPM). Would not a SSD increase the score and if so increase performance some? I thought I did my research before buying, but this is not adding up.

From the look of this thread, Novabench is weighted towards videocards which perform well in OpenGL (rather than DirectX), and fast hard drives. I note that it doesn't seem to weight RAM volume and speed or videocard RAM volume quite as highly, and the apparent preference for cards which do well in OpenGL is interesting. I may be wrong, but that's what I see at a first glance. I'd really like to know which specs Logos 4 prefers.

I just got around to running the benchmark test.  I'm glad you crunched the numbers so we can have some idea where we stand in the continuum.  Like your "most users", my score was under 600 -- specifically 470.  I generally find performance to be quite adequate with the exception of notes.  Notes is extremely frustrating.  It will lock up the program for as much as several minutes even on my machine which, while not the fastest was certainly no where near being the slowest.  I would like to test it on my old, old Gateway to see how that performs.  I can only cringe at the thought.  Isn't the progress in computing power amazing?  Yet, programs continue to be developed to push that computing power to the max.  As my stepson used to say when he was a teenager "Too much is never enough."

Logos 4 on my system is usable. I suspect my biggest Achilles heel is the HDD. I have found that my HDD is the bottleneck of my system. At times Logos 4 is quite quick, but the menus, command bar tend to lag significantly.

Getting a new laptop February 2011. Looking for a Core i7 with 8GB Ram, 1 GB ATI dedicated graphics and a 7200 rpm 1TB HDD. I truly hope that would be sufficient.

I can't believe how your similar 2 GHz processor performed so badly (69) compared to mine (199 on page 3).  The indication from other 2.0-2.2 GHz laptop processors is that 200+ is the usual score. I found another test that had our processors about equal (mine is two places lower!). It appears that you got a bad sample[:(]

It could be a cooling/configuration issue. Most laptops will reduce the CPU speed to save battery power, and all PCs will reduce speed if the computer is overheating.

I think what confuses us is the thought that bench scores will automatically Translate to better performance where Logos is concerned. Nova-bench rates on a scale designed to analyze the overall computing experience. They see a need for large storage capacity. They score big for a massive HD whereas Logos only benefits from the GBs it takes to store the software and resources. ( as demonstrated by your 2 drives, The larger one scores better, even though the write speed is much slower.) In my case, I upgraded to an 80GB SSD from a 640GB 7200 drive. The startup time of Logos was reduced from 10-12 sec. to 4 sec. and searches showed massive improvement. However, the Nova-Bench score only increased from 1354 to 1382. It simply does not reflect the actual gains the SSD provided. ( I still have the 640 GB drive for storage, But Nova-Bench only reads the primary drive )  On the other hand, the note taking issue is still intermittent. I firmly believe it is an issue that no amount of computer speed will resolve.

    Thanks Abi Gail,

As I said, I expected greater gains in speed with this purchase, but it has not "blown me away" as I had hoped. Sometime ahead, I will try the SSD. In Window's Performance Information test, it is the weakest performer - 5.9 with other components ranging from 7.1 to 7.4 (RAM). I am also going to look into the overclocking possibilities on my CPU. It may be overcompensating for some activities that do not help me with Logos. [the computer IS for Logos , after all :) ] I do have a turbo button that automatically boosts CPU power, but I don't know how often I can use it and I don't know for how long. Maybe I can run in turbo mode all the time? I'll probably need to make a call to ASUS. but thanks for your sharing your experience with the differences the drive made fo you.

That would be my last resort. The heat and power consumption are increased dramatically. I would suggest monitoring  the CPU usage. Mine rarely maxes out the stock speed. I don't see the benefits overcoming the pitfalls.

I found this thread very interesting and am grateful for the link to Nova Bench. I am looking at upgrading this computer as it is now several (about 3 or 4) years old and thought the information from the benchmark test will help me to compare the specifications with a new machine.

This desktop was built by a local computer store. It doesn't seem to have any problems running Logos and the specs were better than I expected for its age (almost geriatric in computer terms). I may be able to hold out for a while longer before having to invest in a new computer.
